A Grand Bay man is humiliated after having to crawl across the floor to use a public restroom.
Jonathan Breland tried to use the restroom at Sam's Super Burger in Grand Bay, when he says his wheelchair wouldn't fit through the door.
He says what's worse, was having to crawl to the toilet, where there aren't any handicap bars to help.
According to the American's with Disabilities Act of 1990 public businesses are required by Federal law to have handicap access.
Breland has been confined to a wheel chair because of Cerebral Palsy.
With his father's help, the two hope to raise awareness for other people with special needs. "I just want them to be equipped for people like me handicap people. You know that way they could come up here and enjoy the food that I like with out having to get embarrassed the way that I did," Said Jonathan Breland.
Last month, President Bush signed an ammended American's with Disabilities Act into law.
A spokesman for the Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program tells News Five the new law means owners could lose their business if they don't bring it into compliance. We tried to contact the owner of Sam's Super Burger but were unsuccessful.
The A.D.A.P says they try to work with business owners to help them bring their facilities up to compliance. They also handle complaints for the rights of people with disabilities. You can reach the A.D.A.P at 1-800-826-1675.

A Grand Bay man says he had to crawl on the floor in order to use the restroom at one local restaurant.

I don’t like the sound of that MeAmerican,it sounds like we’re not gonna hear from you again and we can’t have that. You add spice to the subjects and no one likes a bland diet. You have a good day too and may all your travels be good ones and enjoyable.

we worked around obstacles, but now an emergency exit for the true handicap people that is something hard to work around.  i guarantee you spinal cord injury patients would give anything to be able to crawl.

madcap, its up to the person who is disabled to apply for disabilty. like my husband did not. now imagine going to a drs office on the 2nd floor and finding out the wheel chair will not fit in the elevator. the only other way up was the stairs
we had a great dr. who just came down and used the drs office on the lst floor. we did not make a big deal over it. suppose that handicap person was on the 5th floor and a fire broke out the elevators did not work. no one knows what tomorrow brings, in this day and time there are far more important issues with the handicap than a toilet. my husband is almost in the same shape as christopeher reeves. when he was able to travel we went prepared.

Once a person is declared disabled, aren’t they entitled to government compensation such as social security? And be practical. You can’t predict when or what a terroist will strike. Handicapped or not we all are at risk and as sad as it sounds it becomes survival of the fittest.

MeAmerican, i disagree. the disabled have a choice where to eat, not always where they work. now a high rise like the twin towers, was probably paid off a long time ago. they leased those offices out for a profit.  i am saying for a lot of money.  they could afford to make a safe exit for handicap. how wide were the stairs everyone went down. could be possible to narrow the stair and put a ramp or something, i just do not know how but it can be done.
