ROBERTSDALE, Alabama - Robertsdale Police say a man with a gun chased a woman believed to be his wife into a store then turned the gun on himself. It happened this afternoon, 11/28/09, at the CVS near the corner of Highways 59 and 104. It was a scary and unusual scene in Robertsdale as a body was being wheeled out the front doors of the store. Authorities say the incident started at about 5:30 pm as a domestic dispute between a couple believed to be husband and wife.“[He] confronted her here in the parking lot he fired at her as she ran towards the CVS we know he fired at her multiple times,” says Chief Investigator for the Robertsdale Police Department Sergeant Rex Bishop.
The woman dashed into the store with the gunman behind her. Then, for some unknown reason, he decided to stop and instead shoot himself in the head. Authorities in Robertsdale say the investigation is on going but they don't know why the gunman ended up turning the gun on himself.
“We're very grateful no innocent bystanders were hurt this person decided for some reason not to kill anyone but himself,” says Bishop. says the store was full of people when the gunman rushed in. The woman is okay and the only person harmed was the gunman.
“This very well could have been a bad situation with a domestic situation evidently this individual was determined,” says Bishop. As police gathered evidence, a small crowd of onlookers gathered at the scene.
“You never think that something like that would ever happen here when it does it takes effect on everyone here,” says James Richardson. The identities of the victim and the shooter haven't been released. Authorities would only say they're a Baldwin County couple. Robertsdale Police wouldn't say if the two arrived together or travelled separately to the store.
