There's not much left to this three-story home in the upscale Martinique community off Fort Morgan Road. A fire destroyed the residence early Sunday morning, turning lives upside down. The homeowners and their small children were inside when the fire broke out but managed to get out safely.

High winds made it difficult for fire crews to battle the blaze. A Gulf Shores firefighter was hurt when a piece of metal blew off the roof and struck him in the head.

"It hit his helmet, crushed his faceshied, knocking him to the ground," says Gulf Shores Fire Marshal Keith Martin. "We had to send him to the hospital and discovered he has a slight concussion, a lacerations to the face and did chip a couple of his teeth."

Martin says the firefighter will be okay.

"It's an extremely dangerous job," says Martin. "High wind conditions during fighting a fire you have to worry about debris being knocked off the building not only from the fire operation itself but from high winds in this case."

The homeowner tells News 5 he'll rebuild and start over.
