MOBILE, Alabama - A retired airline executive is trying tosave the Gulf Coast Classic football game, an annual matchup
between Alabama State University and Southern University.
Amelia Bacon, who worked for U.S. Airways for 34 years, has been
appointed the new executive director of the Classic. She went to
Southern and has family members who went to both schools.
The game has been played as an Alabama State home game in Mobile
for 34 years, but last year organizers tried to make it a true
classic with the same two teams playing every year. They asked the
city of Mobile last year to increase its contribution from $40,000
to $450,000. But the Mobile City Council gave only $275,000.
Organizers were unable to meet their financial obligations to
the schools and city officials were disappointed by low turnout.
