Giardini was prosecuting the case of a former Chickasaw police officer accused of raping his stepdaughter, 11 year old Rebecca McEvoy.
Theresa Jordan, McEvoy's cousin, talked about her reaction Monday evening when she heard Giardini had resigned.
Jordan said, "I was watching the 5:00 news and I saw it and my stomach just sunk. I was like, 'Oh God.' "
Giardini was prosecuting the case against Bob Ingle, who is charged with rape, sodomy and sexual abuse of McEvoy.
McEvoy's aunt, Sherry Dismukes, said she first heard just that an assistant DA was resigning.
Dismukes said, "I said, 'Please Lord, don't let it be Giardini,' because he's been with us on this long ride."
McEvoy died in a car crash early last year, and, since then, the trial has been delayed several times.
Jordan said, "Now with this happening, there's no telling how many more delays (there may be.)"
Sherry Dismukes said, "He's been there, he understands everything. If somebody else comes in, this ain't going to be like their baby because they haven't been there from the get go, like he has."
Now, both women said they're waiting to hear from the District Attorney's office about what happens next.
Dismukes said, "I wish Giardini the best because he's been our friend through it all. And I had so much trust in him and I don't care what nobody says or finds about him, he's a good guy and he's out for justice."
Jordan said, "I'm just going to look at this like this is God's timing, because there's still some evidence maybe God wants to bring forth and so that's the way I'm going to look at this. I'm not going to look at this as a curse. I'm going to look at this as this is a blessing."
