Effective Dec. 1, 2008, the company reduced rates by 6 percent. Due to the lingering effects of increased natural gas commodity costs, however, the typical residential customer’s monthly bill could increase approximately $11 to $24 during the winter, when compared with last winter, assuming normal weather patterns.
Mobile Gas recovers the cost of natural gas supplies by passing these costs through to customers without profit or markup. Customers will feel the impact of the pass-through more sharply during this winter season because more gas is consumed during cold-weather months.
Reducing energy use can help reduce winter bills. A few energy-saving tips customers should consider:
• Change or clean furnace filters when needed.
• Lower the thermostat on your heater and water heater.
• Caulk or seal air leaks around plumbing, electrical wiring and exterior penetrations on walls, floors, or ceilings.
• Eliminate air leaks around doors, windows, and baseboards.

• Check heating ducts and repair or seal ducts that may be leaking.
• Open your draperies or blinds on sunny days to allow the sun’s heat to warm your home.
• Place a throw rug at the foot of exterior doors to keep cold air from coming inside.
The company also offers services to those who may have difficulty in paying their energy bill.
These services include:
• Balanced Billing: Call Mobile Gas and enroll at no charge. Qualified customers can spread out utility payments over a 12-month period creating a more uniform bill.
• Energy Bill Assistance: Customers may qualify for utility bill assistance through the Low Income Energy Assistance Program.
• Agency Referral: Mobile Gas can refer customers to local agencies that may provide assistance.
• Late Payment Notification: Call Mobile Gas in advance so the payment situation can be addressed early.
