She's known as Bayou La Batre's hurricane doctor and could soon be the next U.S. Surgeon General.

Doctor Regina Benjamin is well known to our viewers. She runs the rural health clinic on Tapia Lane. Dr. Benjamin lost her business in hurricane Katrina but still managed to doctor the sick. She's the recipient of many awards including the MacArthur "Genius" Award.

Now, she is in the running to be the county's top doctor. "I am honored and I am humbled to be nominated as United States Surgeon General. This is the physicians dream but for me it's more than just a job. So thank you Mister President for having the confidence in me and if confirmed, I promise to give you and the American people my best."

We leaned late today that we won't be able to do any interview with Dr. Benjamin until after the confirmation hearing by the Senate. That process might not happen for at least 6 weeks.

Doctor Regina Benjamin, has worked hard and there are alot of things she can do. The office of Surgeon General is just not one of them. The OSG is more of a military type post and not for a Mother Teresa, counrty Doctor, board setter.

amysouthernbound,

Granny Nell loves Dr. Benjamin and loves working with her.

When Granny Nell retired, Dr. benjamin called two days later to check up on her. Granny Nell told Dr. Benjamin she was bored to death, so Dr. Benjamin offered Granny Nell her job back and she came running with open arms.

In fact, Granny Nell will be in our story about Dr benjamin tonight on News 5 at 6:00.

There is nothing wrong with Dr. Spriggs at all, he does not have the education Dr. Benjamin has, tho. And I have to say this much, I really don’t care for gossip, in this matter. I am looking at what she has done professionally, and what she stands for. Do I live with her? Can I speak for her? Of course not. I know what I have seen and as much as I would like to be able to speak specifically about it, I cannot, amysouthernbound.
Is there some other physician more qualified, I don’t know, maybe. If you listen to what she said in her statement, she talked about healing. There are alot of ppl hurting out there. Like it or not, those who live in poverty ARE sicker than middle class folks..
If there is a problem in her background, I am certain it will be revealed. Does that make her a bad physician? Not necessarily, it depends on what the problem is. Are any of you willing to step under the spotlight of federal scrutiny? And an FBI background check is an intense situation to undergo.
Her focus is community medicine. That is important. So far, I haven’t seen or read anything that makes me feel differently.

PS.
I’ve heard around the Bayou that Dr. Regina Benjamin has had a single extremely hard working LPN in her office for many years and she is known as Granny Nell.  She’s about 75 years old and is nearly disabled by a chronic infection in her foot.  She limps around and tries so hard to do all the scut work in order to please Dr. Benjamin.  I’ve been told by collegues that Granny Nell works herself to death down there at Bayou Clinic.  This seems so wong to me and it’s downright cruel to work that poor woman so hard when she is limping around with a walker trying to do all the scut LPN work.

she is window dressing for obama’s fruit salad. she could get a job in the office but not run it.

I’m not so sure that Dr. Regina Benjamin is the best choice for Surgeon General.  I think that alot of the secrets of her past will come out during confirmation hearings and I think that she will back of the deal.  Down here in South Alabama I think that there are several other minority physicians who would be ideal candidates for consideration for Surgeon General. What about Daniel Spriggs?  I’m a drug rep and I called on him a few times and I think he’s terrific.  He does alot of pro bono work with patients suffering from Sickle Cell Anemia.  He’s a Providence Doctor and he seems to be an extremely hard working, highly capable physician.  He’s one of the few African-American physicians employed by Providence Hospital.  Why not consider Dr. Spriggs for Surgeon General?  Dr. Benjamin is 99% high-powered politician and 1% physician.  I have collegues who tell me that she’s really masculine and she has a hard time getting along with people. My pharmaceutical rep friends tell me that she’s really bossy and she makes other people do all her work for her.  She refers nearly all of her insured and Medicaid patients out to subspecialists without actually requiring an office visit with a physican.  My friends tell me that her nurse practitioner usually sees all the patients since there isn’t a doctor available. My collegues tell me that Dr. Benjamin is rarely in her office since she’s out of town doing talks all the time.  “Thumbs down” on this nomination for Surgeon General.

Well ickthus, I would have thought that you would have least googled her before you started shooting your mouth off again.
If you had, you would know that Dr. Benjamin has sat on the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners, (those are the ppl who issue and revoke Medical Licenses in this state), She has sat on the Board of trustees for the American Medical Association, (Wow, now THERE is a qualification), AND She has sat on the Board of trustess for the Mobile County Medical Society AND the Mobile area Red Cross. Hmmmmm, still not qualified enough for you?
She even has some of that precious Military experience that means so much to you. National Health Service Corp…
So, what would be qualified enough for you ickthus??

One other small point, when you call us all a bunch of “tree huging fruit cake sheep”, that would be an attempt at being personal, the ppl you hire to staff something and work, they are personell…

Have you worked with her ickthus?? Obviously not.
A community oriented physician is EXACTLY what we need in this postition. No one is born knowing how to be a doctor, or how to be the Surgeon General. And it’s ridiculous to expect that.

Regardless of the make up of the Senate, that is still no guarantee of confirmation. I think she will do just fine.

okay

the problem is that the President is an Idiot and doesn’t care who they are as long as they are in his back pocket. some very qualified people have been asked to take posts but were not going to work for him after talking with him. He is a joke.

4 real it depends on who you ask but evidently the president doesnt think there is anyone more qualified, or he would have nomintaed them right?
