The third annual sales tax holiday weekend begins in the Mobile area at 12:01 a.m. Friday. Its an opportunity for shoppers to save money on school supplies.
At least one community is making an active push to get its shoppers to stay close to home.
The City of Prichard is making phone calls to people who live there reminding them to shop at home.
Latoya Neal with the City of Prichard said, "We really expect a big boom this year with the energy costs being so expensive and we want people to invest back into the community and to shop here in Prichard instead of going out of the city limits."
Small and large stores in Prichard are hoping for a brisk business during the sales tax holiday weekend that lasts until midnight Sunday.
There is also a non-profit volunteer group in Mobile giving away free school uniforms and school supplies.
The group is called "All God's Children," and the giveaway will take place at the Semmes Community Center beginning Friday at 9 a.m.
Group member Conyers Courtney said, "There's no limit on what you can take. We hope that you will just take what you need. A lot of very nice people have donated things for us. We've gone out and asked our neighbors, people we know, to donate."
Stephen Denmark with "All God's Children" said, "This is a non-profit organization, and so we don't have a lot of money to put forth. We're all God's children relying on God."
Group members said the giveaway will last until supplies run out.
