Daphne residents who live in the Lake Forest Subdivision lost water Friday when four water mains broke at the same time.A spokesman for Daphne Utilities says air in the water line caused a "hammer effect." He said its similar to when you turn off your faucet at home and hear the pipes shaking in the walls. But in this case, the water mains did not shake, they broke.
While crews worked to repair the water main breaks, three wells also shut down. One of them shut down because of a power supply issue. Riviera Utilities supplies power to the pump for the well. The company is dealing with a huge demand for power because of the recent high temperatures. When the pump noticed a dip in the power supply, the pump automatically shut off as a safety feature.
The second well has been running non-stop due to an increase in the demand for water. It shut down to cool off.
Daphne Utilities took the third well off line because of a dip in the water table.
All four water mains have been repaired and all three wells are back up and running.
Daphne Utilities expects water pressure levels will be back to normal within a couple of hours.
