WASHINGTON (AP) - The Rev. Joseph Lowery has thanked God for
letting Barack Obama inspire the nation to believe that "yes, we
can" work together toward a "more perfect union."
Delivering a benediction at the end of Obama's inauguration
ceremony, Lowery said Obama takes office at a "low moment" in the
nation's and the world's economic health. He prayed for an end to
"exploitation" of the weak and poor, and what he called
"favoritism toward the rich."
The 87-year-old Methodist is considered the dean of the civil
rights movement, helping lead the Montgomery bus boycotts in the
1950s and delivering a list of demands to Alabama Gov. George
Wallace during the bloody Selma-Montgomery March in 1965.
Lowery preached at Warren Street United Methodist Church in Toulminville from 1952-1961.
After being asked to deliver the benediction at Obama's
inauguration, Lowery said he's long hoped that an African-American
would one day become president, but didn't think he'd live long
enough to see it.

Oh but do you think we would have been allowed to watch it if there was a white president… i don’t think so!

I agree!! They made us put this on in schools because it is a historic event and my little children I teach had to listen to this garbage!!!!! Yeah there is definate double standards.  I hope Obama does well.  I just wish the election would have been based on credintials and not the color of your skin.  Not saying Obama shouldn’t have won but it’s apparent why he did.

Be prepared! This is just the beginning. More to come form these holier than thou “Yes WE Can” Movement. It’s sad, absurd, and pathetic this new found air of superiority. When we should be looking at equality fo all, Too many are attempting to widen the seperation of all brothers and sisters regardless of skin. I was under the impression of, We can judge a man on the content of his character rather than the color of his skin”. Rev. Lowerys’ comments show a serious lack of that character.

I have to ask, why when white people are ofended by something a black person says we are whining, but when blacks are offended they are being discriminated againt.  Alabama Jim, your comments are totally wrong, if anything HE should have kept to the blessing and tried to bring all people together, nit make racist comments.  HE may have earned it in your eyes but in my eyes he used a Historical ttime in Americas history to race-bait and keep the racism going.  I truly believe we white people will never get over racism, because the blacks will never let it go.

It’s funny how if a white person says things about a different race its called racism.  If a black gets up and talks about things like this its called the truth.

If black americans would stop calling attention to it, there would be no racism.  They are the ones who keep racism alive. Yes, its the truth and you know it.

I am so sick of black people whining about what their ancestors had to do. do you hear me as a woman whining because my grandmothers & great grandmothers had to live in the shadow of a man. & incase you weren’t taught this in school slaves were paid, given a place to live, & food!! & black africans sold other black africans to white americans!! so quit living in the pits of despair get up & make a better life for yourself!

& he should have said BLACK SHOULDN’T LOOK BACK!!

HEY BE MELLER YELLER—LOWERY IS 87. HE HAS PAID HIS DUES. HE HAS BEEN THROUGH SOME ST*FF. INCLUDING HIS ARREST IN d.c. OVER THE MANDELA ISSUES. HIS MIND IS SHARP AND HE STILL HAS A SENSE OF HUMOR. POOR LITTLE BAMABELLE AND COLORBLIND SORRY TO UPSET YOUR DELICATE feelings. But the idea of beating tanks into tractors is long overdue. To Joe I say Amen Brother.

Well said bamabelle - I thought it was just me. It sounded as though he was reading a racist poem. It certainly did not sound like a prayer to me. Why didn’t he just simply pray for our country.

I am glad to see that I am not the only one offended by Rev. Lowery’s racist remarks.  it is EVERYONE’S responsibility to do what is right.
A benediction is supposed to be a blessing, so hw come I didn’t feel blessed? I found his remarks to be rude and insulting.  Especially since he was supposed to be praying and not doing a stand-up comedy act. WWJD?  Certainly not that!!! If this man is suppose to be a servant of God then why didn’t he do the right thing and keep his racist comments to himself.

I loved Reverend Lowery’s benediction. I thought it was lyrical and honest. He pulled in all ages and colors. I fail to see how saying whites have the opportunity to make it right is racist. It’s true. In my time, my friends were not welcome at the same restaurants. In my time, I have friends who received a subpar education because of where they lived and how much money they made. In my time, it would have been very difficult for me to have the freedom to love a man of any color. When I rented the house I eventually bought, my landlord commented that she would not make the home section 8 because she didn’t want “THEM” renting here. When my sister-in-law, a school district employee, uses the words, gooks and spades, she is not RIGHT. When I witness first hand my boss placing specific people in better paying positions because of the color of their skin or their gender, it is not right. When I let these people pass by with their comments and behaviors, it is not right. I agree with him.
