BOAZ, Ala. (AP) - Former Alabama Gov. Guy Hunt is being
remembered for his service to the state and for his faith.
About 1,000 people attended a state memorial service for Hunt at
a community college in Boaz on Wednesday.
GOP Gov. Bob Riley called Hunt a great Republican who was also
loved by Democrats and independents. But faith came first in Hunt's
life, Riley said, followed by his family.
Hunt was a Primitive Baptist preacher who, in 1986, was elected
as Alabama's first Republican governor since Reconstruction. He was
later accused on a state ethics charge and became the state's first
governor forced by office by a felony conviction.
Republican speakers during the service said Hunt was falsely
accused and wrongly convicted.
