The City of Mobile says Florida Street will reopen this week. But business owners say they'll believe it when they see it.

Construction crews have tied up traffic along Florida Street for more than two years. Since then drivers have had to deal with road closures and detours.
Today, crews poured pavement on the stretch of Florida Street between Emogene and Dauphin Street. On Friday the City says both sides of the street will finally be open to traffic. In the meantime, business owners are holding their breathe.
"It's been really frustrating having to spend so much money on advertisement [and] not getting the drive by traffic is something we rely on especially with the economy being the way it is,"Said Courtney Dyke with Lola Bell's Pet Grooming.

The City says they are still working on getting a permit to work on an area near the railroad tracks between Emogene and Dauphin Street. Until then the road will be open to through traffic. The Florida Street drainage project has cost the City of Mobile nearly 3 million dollars.

I hate to complain but it is about time.  That was 2 years of total, daily irritation!  My three yr old dog is afraid of it’s shadow because of all the people, noises (you wouldn’t believe the pounding and ground shaking) and equipment in front of our house and up the street.  I was blocked in my driveway countless times and my neighbor often had to drive through my yard to get out.  One neighbors front half of his car fell into an unmarked hole (negligence).  And how do you think they left my front yard when the moved on????? I agree.  They’ll be back digging it back up to correct mistakes (poor workmanship and planning)!

I’ll betcha 3 more million dollars the next big rain we get that Florida street will flood again.

They have spent millions and millions of dollars on parts of Springhill Avenue, Florida Street and Dauphin Street for so called “drainage” repairs and it still floods.

My guess now is that it gives the city workers a job so they will continue to waste money. When Sam realizes he aint got no mo money then he will find another Wal-Mart for annexation to pay for more drainage repairs.

I bet you,in 6 months they will have it tore up again, fixing it again. You watch.
