Tenants in a midtown Mobile apartment building had to scramble for safety after a quick moving fire broke out.It happened Tuesday afternoon at Barrington Park Apartments at 442 Cottage Hill Road.
You could watch the fire grow before your eyes: flames engulfed a third floor apartment and spread through the roof while sirens screamed in the background.
People poured out of nearby apartments.
Fire officials said there was moderate fire damage inside the living room of the third apartment.
That apartment was vacant.
They said there was light smoke damage to the first two floors.
Richard Conklin lives in the bottom floor apartment and scrambled to save his dogs.
Conklin said, "I was downstairs in the bottom apartment and, all of a sudden, some guy comes down here and told me that the house was on fire. I said, 'What are you talking about?' He says 'Its on fire, get out of there,' and I said, 'Okay,' and just walked out of there."
Another tenant, Victoria Riollano said, "It looked like a piece of roof of that particular building just started to catch on fire and, within like two minutes, the whole thing was up in flames."
Steve Huffman with the Mobile Fire Department said firefighters "got here quick, made a very aggressive attack and, for all practical purposes, saved this building, because you could have very well had the entire building (burned) instead of just a small area."
Investigators are still looking into what caused the fire.
No one was hurt.
