The FBI and US Coast Guard are investigating how 50 year old Michelle Vilborg went overboard the Holiday cruise ship.

Vilborg was reported missing late Monday night after another guest on the ship reported hearing a splash, according to a statement from Carnival Cruise Line.

"Obviously we're gonna have to talk to anybody who saw anything, heard anything, anybody who might have any input into what might have happened on the ship," said Angela Tobon, a spokesperson for the FBI.

Tobon would not comment on details of the case, including whether there are any witnesses. Investigators have not yet said where on the ship they believe Vilborg went overboard.

Michelle Vilborg and her husband, Sven, were on the cruise celebrating her birthday. The couple's son says Sven Vilborg was asleep in the cabin when he was awaken by an alarm. A headcount of passengers and crew members on the Holiday revealed Michelle Vilborg was nowhere to be found.

The US Coast Guard is continuing its search for the missing passenger. The ship was sailing 70 miles south, southwest of Pensacola when officials believe Vilborg went overboard.

Lieutenant Matt Mitchell, a spokesperson for the Coast Guard, says the cruise ship's captain and crew did everything right. Mitchell says when the crew realized a passenger went overboard, they immediately lowered a small life boat equipped with a strobe light, so they could follow the current. The crew then lowered two more boats with crew members to begin the search.

The Holiday stayed in the area for 12 hours before continuing on to Cozumel, Mexico Tuesday evening.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the Coast Guard was continuing to search an area 28 miles wide.

Vilborg's son and daughter arrived in Cozumel this afternoon to be with their father.

The Holiday, which accommodates up to 1452 passengers and 680 crew members, is scheduled to return to Mobile Saturday.

The ship is 728 feet long and 91 feet, according to a local travel agency's website. There are nine decks on the boat, and the vessel cruises at 21 knots.

just seems to me like some of these people need to stay on land. that way when they fall it will be on the ground. hard to just fall off a ship unless you have some help. can you say insurance money.

bamabob, i think the alarm that sounded was the “Man Overboard!” siren along with a horn sounding behind it.  Is that what you were asking earlier?  I hope so, because I just said that.  heh.

It is weird to me that she was out wandering around so late without her husband.  I mean, nothing wrong with it at all, but my friend and I were discussing this today and we were trying to picture ourselves wandering a cruise ship so late without our husbands on the first night of stay.  We couldn’t.  Even still, I do hope they figure out what happened to her and hope to learn that it was just a tragic accident and no foul play involved.  AND I do wish they would install some cameras.  Hellooo.

How can someone fall over the rail?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QznjEhdV0o

I just can’t picture a 50-year-old woman deciding to climb up on any rail at 11:00pm, during her first night on the ship.  Some sloshed youngsters might try a stupid trick like that, but not a mature woman.

Here’s a question…you have to have a passport to go on this cruise, right? You don’t get a passport in 2 weeks time (usually takes at least a month, and you have to list your destination when you apply). That being said,if they planned the trip 2 weeks ago, they would have already HAD a passport,so that would indicate they were ?seasoned travellers, right? So assuming they were veteran travellers, why would someone climb on top of the rails, knowing the danger. Doesn’t the cruise give a list of do’s and don’ts before embarking? I am not saying that anything other than this being an accident has happened, but all the pieces of the puzzle don’t fit…

What a terrbile tragedy.  I can’t imagine why Carnival wouldn’t make arrangements for this man to get off the boat; did they expect him to “enjoy” his trip to Cozumel?  The overall mood on that ship had to be quite awkward for everyone.  But for the family, it had to be insult to injury.

Yes, cmb1, it absolutely could suck someone under it. The cavitation from the propwash is tremendous and the thrust is certainly enough to not only pull you under, but also force you downward. Since a body will sink first, that scenario is highly probable. They have not said exactly where she was when she fell, but that also makes a difference. Also, factor in the impact from the fall, about 50 feet, and that alone is enough to cause fatal injuries. No one has said if she was able to swim or not, but if she could not swim…well, you get the picture. It may sound bad, but I truly hope that this was nothing more than a tragic accident. My condolences to the family of this woman. I apologize in advance if my comments have offended anyone…just analyzing the facts folks.

It would be weird not to be able to get off the boat (if you were a loved one of someone who feel over) I wonder if he will be able to fly home with it kids or if they will all get on the boat and come home?  This whole story is becoming weirder ever time someone reports something? A boat that big couldn’t it suck a person up under it?

“fishy”?
