Update 6:43 p.m.
At a press conference Sunday evening, the Mobile County Sheriff's Office say they were justified in the shooting and killing of triple murder suspect William Wood. They also say Wood had an extensive criminal history. Authorities say there were multiple rounds fired at the scene of the triple murder in Fairhope, but would not give the names of the victims or the condition of the surviving victim. They did not say what Wood's motive was, but did say he lost a child recently in a car accident last month.

Update - 5:50 p.m.
Three people were murdered last night in Fairhope and now police say the man who pulled the trigger is dead. Authorities were looking for William Odel Wood. He was considered armed and dangerous, but police spotted him earlier this afternoon and say he led them on a chase down I-10. Authorities say at one point he was firing through the back window of his SUV at officers.

The chase ended near I-10 and I-65 where he wrecked his Chevy Blazer. Police say Wood shot four people late Saturday at a home in the 10000 block of Highway 98. Three of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene. A fourth was taken to a local hospital. Police have not yet identified the victims.

FAIRHOPE POLICE DEPARTMENT
PRESS RELEASE

DATE: April 26, 2009

SUBJECT: Murder

"On Saturday April 25, 2009, at 11:15 PM, Baldwin County 911 received a phone call reporting a shooting at a residence located in the 10000 Block of U.S. Highway 98 in Fairhope and officers of the Fairhope Police Department responded to the scene. Upon arrival, the officers found that there were four gunshot victims in the residence. When paramedics arrived on-scene, they determined that three of the victims were deceased. The fourth, a thirty-three year old white female, was taken by helicopter to an area hospital. For security reasons, the name of the hospital is not being released. The surviving victim was able to relate enough details to investigators for them to believe that the offenses were committed by William Odel Wood II, a white male, 37 years old, of Semmes, Alabama. Wood is described as 6’3” tall, approximately 224 pounds with blond hair and blue eyes. For identification purposes, it should be noted that he uses a colostomy bag. He is believed to be driving a 1994 black Chevrolet Blazer. The weapon used was a high powered rifle, and Wood is considered to be armed and extremely dangerous. Wood has not been located and his current location is unknown. Warrants for his arrest have been signed, charging Wood with three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder. The names of the deceased are not being released at this time to allow for notification of family members. Anyone with information about Wood’s current location is asked to phone 911 or their nearest law enforcement agency."

In response to the headline “HIP HIP HOORAY!!!” I wonder if people in Baldwin County are locking their doors yet?

What a sad story.  All I can say is going out the way he did saved the taxpayers a lot of money, justice served by the firing squad.

what? you don’t understand karma or an exwife?

Fairhope police have released the names of the three people who were shot and killed Saturday night.

Police say William Wood of Semmes, who was recently released from prison, shot his ex-wife 34-year-old Melonie Wood, her boyfriend, 20-year-old James Tucker and Tucker’s grandparents, 70-year-old Jesse Warrick Jr. and 67-year-old Louise Warrick, with a high-powered rifle at their home on Highway 98.

Melonie Wood survived the attack. She’s listed in stable condition at a local hospital.

William Wood was killed Sunday afternoon during a high speed chase and shootout with Mobile County Deputies on I-10.

Police have not released a motive for the murders, but Wood’s son was killed March 9th in a tragic accident. Four year old Austin Wood’s skateboard rolled out onto Highway 98. He ran after it and was hit by a pick-up truck.

Monica~you are obviously a kind-hearted person. So am I. But I believe part of the problem in our society is having the mindset that we DO “understand someone going crazy” when their lives are crumbling around them. 15 yrs ago, “going crazy” meant something far less sinister than it does today. Gradually, we are beginning to ACCEPT THAT!
We must not justify his actions any more than we can justify a man murdering his entire family because they are losing everything or a woman who kills her child because she “lost it”.

The little boy’s death was not an INTENTIONAL, violent act. It was SENSELESS, yes. But it was an accident.

I hope you see my point.

ick-I have no idea what you are trying to convey. Sorry, I just don’t understand your post at all.

No, Monica~I don’t think you are defending him. But as I said before, you are justifying it over and over again by exploiting the death of his son as a rational excuse to execute human lives-and you’re not alone. There is no ‘moral’ to this story. You are all ASSUMING his violent acts were in response to his son’s death. The fact remains he brutally murdered 3 people and attempted to murder 1 more-that does not take into account the officers whose lives were put at risk in an attempt to contain this man’s rage.
Regarding the tragic loss of the child, I am the mother of an almost 3 yr old son and I would NEVER EVER allow him to play near any roadway-busy or not. Nor would I let him get away from me in a Wal-Mart for even 5 seconds-as was the case with Adam Walsh and countless others, nor would I live in a home without a strong security system. But people do…every day. Children drown, are hit by cars, abducted-in each case, adequate supervision or security normally prevents death.

Moral of the story:

Be a responsible adult and don’t let children play near the street.  Especially a very busy highway where vehicle travel at speeds of 60 MPH. As sad as all of this is, I hope this retaliation doesn’t overshadow the death of that innocent child that was killed because he was allowed to do just that while being in the care of irresponsible so called adults.

All of this could have been prevented.

I hope the woman gets plenty of psychological help along with being treated for her physical wounds.  I can’t imagine what must be going through her mind right now.

Anyone heard if the mother is ok?
