FAIRHOPE, Ala. (AP) - Fairhope's City Council split 3-2 in
approving a 2-cent municipal sales tax that the mayor earlier
threatened to veto.
The tax approved Monday night becomes effective June 1, barring
a veto.
Mayor Tim Kant was away from the city during the council vote
and could not be reached for comment. Overriding a mayoral veto
would require a 4-1 vote.
City officials have estimated that the tax would bring in about
$7.8 million annually.
Located on Mobile Bay's eastern shore, Fairhope's population,
bolstered by an influx of retirees, has surged from about 12,480 in
2000 to more than 16,000 in 2007. The sales tax would be the city's
first since its founding 101 years ago.
