Elderly Man Dies In House Fire

Alabama Mobile  Mobile firefighters say the man was trying to get out of the house when he collapsed from smoke inhalation.

- The 88-year-old man died at Mobile Infirmary.
- Mobile Fire-Rescue spokesman Steve Huffman says the victim had 1st and 2nd degree burns on his chest, arms and legs; and 3rd degree burns on his back.
- He also had black soot around his nose and burns to his airway.
- The man's son said he checked on him every morning. The fire started in the back bedroom after he left his father's house.
- Damage is estimated at $50,000.

1:16 p.m.
An elderly man was rushed to a hospital Tuesday morning after firefighters pulled him from his burning home.

The fire started around 9:00 a.m. at a house on Dauphin Island Parkway near Bankhead Street. Mobile Fire-Rescue spokesman Steve Huffman says they found the victim laying face down in his hallway. They believe he was trying to escape when he collapsed from smoke inhalation.

As of 12 Noon, he was listed in serious condition at Mobile Infirmary.

Investigators are trying to figure out how the fire started.
