A faltering economy is forcing some people to get rid of their pets. The City of Mobile's Animal Shelter says the number of abandoned animals has risen over the past 3 months.
The shelter says families facing tough times have dropped off their pets because they can no longer afford to care for them.
Even though their kennels are cramped, the shelter is encouraging people to bring their pets to a shelter, so they can try and find them a new home.
"Our adoption rate is very high so we prefer that you bring the animal to the shelter instead of abandoning it because there's a lot of things that can happen. They can get hit by a car, they can be poisoned, they can just get sick and die. So it's better to come here where we do vaccinate and we de-worm them and we give them health care,"Said Jackie Wells, an Assistant Director at the shelter.
The animal shelter says pet owners can help by spaying or neutering their pets. The city shelter holds a spay-neuter clinic every Wednesday at their facility.
You can call the City of Mobile Animal Shelter at 208-2830 to make an appointment. You can also visit their website for more information.
