The National Association of Broadcasters van is in Mobile giving away prizes and refreshments in an effort to draw attention to their effort to make sure viewers are prepared for the switch.
The van was at the Walmart on Schillinger Road on Friday and it will visit the Mobile Convention Center on Saturday. Next weekend the van will travel to Pensacola and Fort Walton.
Latrice Griffin is the publicity director for DTV Answers. She says here's what she informs people when they visit the van. " If you're using antennas on your television, either rabbit ears, or a roof top antenna, you will need a converter box after feb17th, 2009.
If you have a digital television set, one that has a digital built in tuner, that television is equipped to pick up the signal on its own... And the third option is, if you're subscribing to cable or satellite tv, your service provider will transition you over to digital.
She says all of your questions about the transition and discount coupons can be answered by calling 1-888-DTV-2009 or by going online at www.dtvanswers.com.

i am exploring options for other than over the air, cable, small dish, and that newfangled bellsouth service over the telephone, as well as fooling with a computer to stream vieo over the house. the biggest issue is content, what i can watcu and watching it wheni want to watch it. there is nothing like the immediacy of broadcast, and they are getting me hooked on a couple of shows, like 24, fringe, and lost. i want to see them when they come out. its not going to be the ease of getting up and turning on a switch like it was before. and the digital will not be as reliable i do not think. i wonder what wkrg’s percentage of over the air signal delivery will be after the change. i imagine it will be low and furhter discourage the station from investing in infrastructure upgrades. looks like this is costing me all the way around. and carl you know i will borrow 99 cents to keep from breaking a dollar.

Southfan consider yourself lucky! You must be on a hill or close to the stations and have a clear line of site to the transmitters. But you should notice losing the signal more often as what you have ages and bad weather.

The big dish still works I think but I was having remote control problems with it. I still turn it on and go through some channels testing it out. That was the best reception I have ever got, with that setup. It was a 1ST generated signal that it worked off and weather was never a problem with it.those newfoundland channels were a day or two ahead of all our channels. The wife really liked that on her soap operas.

I have liked my digital converter box. I love three PBS channels and better reception on other channels WHEN WE GET THEM. I thought this was crazy until I got to flip a whole knew remote!

I am concerned about post storm reception. It’s pretty nice to get channels on our little battery operated set when we have a bad storm.

BTW, I basically have rabbit ears.

i used to have a c band dish in the yard but it broke a few years ago and couldnt get it repaired, took it down. that was back when i didint pay as close attention to things and had two grandmothers and mother out here after a storm. thin k they had cable too. slowly got it all turned off. is your big dish still functional? do you get many feeds? i was an early adopter when nothing was scrambled. got johnny carson scratching his nose and stuff like that.

GOOD MORNING DEW an ClayCITY! I probably won’t have any problems with mine. I got three choices for my TV watching,Amplified over the air, small satellite dish,or large satellite dish. But there is gonna be a big bunch not so lucky.Trying different set ups for the last year and a half maybe,I would always lose 15,44,55 and 42 for most of the times and all those religious channels all the time,This is with an outside antenna and a converter box.Just imagine those with a low antenna or rabbit ears, their signal level is gonna be pretty weak so they won’t get any picture at all, with a converter box or a new digital TV.Won’t be any picture below a certain signal level. What I’m worried about is that this is gonna hit a lot of folks when they can least afford it with the economy as it is.Some people are confined and use their TVs for company and new and weather. Some are not gonna have that option any longer unless they have some money to use for that purpose.

Mr.Carl, if you stuck without any channels after the DTV transition, you should check into getting a FTA(free-to-air)satellite receiver and dish. You can get the complete motorized set-up for around 350$, which I know is pretty expensive, but you’ll get hundreds of channels for FREE! I got one, with the motorized dish, and i never run out of channels to watch. You can get feeds from all over the US and many other countries if you want. Here’s a list of all the channels available in the US:

Sucks though, that WKRG does not have a FTA feed, then I could watch it from all the way up here!

or wkrg for that matter hint hint hint mr peterson. i only get wear and wpmi and a bunch of religious channels. maybe someone is trying to tell me something. i either need more religion or cbs and fox are bad for me to watch.

i took out an older computer and have already converted a bunch of video for my ipod thing, about a hundred movies or so and constantly converting dvd’s. it plugs into my new big screen monitor. i can stream video from the networks, watch one of the movies i have converted, or watch a limited amount of over the air from a tuner card i installed. (Currently digital and analog) i can also look at it with any computer on my home network. thats my solution. course i am in a hotel three or four days a week and do have cable there but really am not watching it much anymore. i miss the over the air broadcasts sometimes though, i cant get fox where i live

I believe most of the frequencies presently occupied by the stations have been bought up by the Electronic manufacturers or have already bid on them. The digital picture transmissions are better than analog but that doesn’t do much good for the ones who won’t be able to get them because of the distance. The further away from the transmitters the worse it will be.These problems should have been taken care of back 2 years or more ago before the production of these boxes and the TVs.A couple of dollars more put into each box or TV during production would have stopped 90 % of the problems I think many are going to face and have to put money out if they wish to watch over the air TV.This comes at a time of a bad economy also.I believe they’re trying pushing everyone to cable or satellite tv.
