MOBILE, Alabama - People in the Highland Court and Brookley Heights area near Dauphin Island Parkway met Monday night to come up with a plan to stop rapes, robberies and deadly shootings.
They held their first meeting of the Highland Court/Brookley Heights Community Watch group.
Thelma Thrash, who lives in the Highland Court area, said, "Our main concern on Highland Court is those apartments."
Case in point, according to Thrash: a 14 year old killed at the Garden Park Estates Apartments in December of 2008 after he was accidentally shot in the head.
Thrash said, "Last year, from six months to a year, it was awful. You'd be afraid to leave home."
Then, this past April, on Delta Street and Greenwood Avenue, there was a drive-by shooting that left a man shot in the leg.
Monteen Lucky said she had just returned to her home on Greenwood Avenue when it happened.
Lucky said, "I was coming from the grocery store and I spoke to my neighbor across the street, and the next minute I heard 'Bang, Bang.' By the time I got out of my car with the groceries, this kid had fallen down on the ground."
Another person in the area tells of a shooting more recently.
Joe Richardson, who lives on Highland Court, said, "Two weeks ago, the jack came up missing from under my vehicle and they shot the dog right across the street. This is just a ride through, grab what you can, and ride back out."
About a dozen people attended the community watch meeting.
They heard from Mobile Police, who told them about recent successful efforts to fight crime in the area.
Police Captain Phillip McCrary said, "We stopped a burglary ring that was one of the biggest burglary rings we've ever had in the city. We cleared 83 burglaries throughout the city from these people that lived over there in Brookley Heights. Its a model that we follow. We scan what the problem is, we do an analysis, and then a response, and then we assess it later to see if we're doing a good job."

hey SHELTIEDAD, and Mom2AngelBaby, I agree with both of your comments. I used to live on d.i.p.back in the 80’s, and it was alright back then! but it’s true, there went that neighborhood! LOL.it’s a shame, it’s getting bad all over, and it’s gonna get worse now that we have “change” coming! this is not the kind of change I had in mind!

I like the term “baiting”.  Apply this technique with the Castle Law.  Place something nice, attractive, and valuable on the front lawn.  Sit on your porch and wait.  I find this rather exciting.  Can be fun for you and the Ms.  Be sure to articulate that it was dark, you thought they had a weapon, and you feared for your life.  Should be open season anyway.  OVERPOPULATION!  I have had enough.

SHELTIEDAD you are oh so right! DIP used to be the place to be. Now I cant stand to go down there. Its sad that the population of bad african american’s outweigh the good ones! Because there are definetly some good ones out there…I went to B.C. Rain, in the 90’s back then it was half/half, now its all African. Same for theodore high school, back when there was just a handfull of African. But, this is what happens when ppl have ten kids, and live off of government funds! Please don’t be offened and there’s no reason for you to be unless your one of those ppl. Thats the only reason you would get mad, but its the truth. There should be a limit as to how many kids one can have who depend on tax payers money to feed there children, cloth them and send them to school. To many ppl think someone owe’s them! Get off your butts, pull your drawers up and get a real job!!!!

An airstrike probably would not eliminate the cockroaches.  They would just scurry back out after the flames die down and rebuild the nail salons and rim stores, paid for with government aid

I don’t think it’s drastic.  I agree totally.  I’m sick of these thugs!!

LOL A little drastic isn’t it Ickthus ? an air strike that is. All it takes for crime and evil to succeed is for the good people to do nothing.Be a nosey neighbor if something doesn’t look or sound right, start watch groups, light up the area, criminals hate being seen and caught on tape.

I remember the “good old days” on dip as well.  I now live on Hollingers Island and the thievs and drug dealers have moved into my neighborhood as well.  I can’t keep anything anymore.  It’s ridiculous.  I live on Bellwood and I and a lot of my neighbors have decided to shoot first and ask questions later.

Mr Richardson is my bestfriends father! He and his wife would not hurt a flea. In fact they would both give you the shirts off there backs. Had the thief stopped to borrow his jack I can bet you he would have given it to them. I can remember going to there house growing up and never was I scared to roam the area. Nowadays its so different! They have lived there every since I was a young girl, now 33. Thats home to them and I know there not going to let these crooks run them away! I wish them the best of luck in fighting these crimes.

call in an air strikeand rebuild

I grew up on DIP in the 70’s and 80’s, boy those were some good times.  You could walk down the street and not worry about a thing.  A certain element has taken over and it’s no wonder why it’s like it is.
