Russell Ladd is no ordinary sportsman. Besides fishing and duck hunting, he's found a new hobby...documenting the land he loves, the Mobile Delta.

Ladd says, "I love this delta. I love to bass fish and I love to brim fish. I've done it all my life."

He's afraid the Delta he knows is changing for good.
"I'm seeing that we do not have the fishing that we use to have, and it's very unfortunate. I have grandchildren that I would love to see perpetuate the memories that I have.”

Ladd decided to make a documentary called 'Delta Awareness' to highlight the changes.
"Our mission was to show the deterioration of the Delta. And our mission also is to show the folks of Mobile and Baldwin County, and the world what a beautiful place this is."

If you would like to check out the 12 minute documentary, check out this link: Delta Awareness.
Ladd says trees and split grass, important for building the delta, are dying.
"It use to look like a really thick forest, today is looks more like a desert. Also the short grasses have died back. You can see the mud right here, this use to be a split grass bank."
In the documentary, he blames dams for disrupting the delta.
"Due to the dams, over the past 40 or 50 years, they've slowed the flow, and we don't have the fast rise or fast fall with the frequent interchange or fresh and salt water."

Ladd wants the state to comment on what he calls delta deterioration.
"I would like for the Department of Conservation to at least acknowledge it, which they have not done."
Phillip Hinesley with the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources watched Ladds' documentary.
Hinesley says, "It was an impressive video. I'm not sure scientifically if it's all correct, but it's certainly an impressive video with all the sites in the delta and the beautiful scenery."
Hinesley doesn't doubt the delta has changed in the last 50 years.
"Anytime you introduce the human element into the environment, there's changes, some good some bad. There's more research that needs to be done before we decide what's causing the problems, if there are indeed problems in the delta."

I,m not qualified to diagnose all the problems with the delta .but i am qualified to give my thoughts And i think Mr. Ladd has hit the nail on the head in the settlement up river Jose creb silted full and the rest of them not far behind.Between the pollution and the rats damn things weigh at least 10 pounds its a wonder there is any grass left. The bass boats i don’t like the numbers but on a plane they hardly leave anything but ringing ears no large waves. The barges and yachts are the ones that throw the rollers,The yachts at times have come a knat’s butt of sending me to the river bottom and you can see them laughing on the fly bridge. Now this wave action is destructive to the banks and riverine grasses.Sedimentation of the sand spawning areas with the black muck i believe is from the sewer systems that are everywhere. We are at the terminal of one large intestion below the colon on this river we catch everybodies s****and it will take a very large overhaul. It’s worth it to me

I don’t go to it as much now as I have in my younger days, hardly ever anymore but I noticed a while back the changes taking effect in the delta. It sort of snuck up on me,the subtle changes, before I started to notice. Then it seemed if something was missing, something supporting it was gone also.It didn’t seem to be as many fish, water fowl and turtles around,But the pollution was proliferating.I thought then of that old commercial with the old Indian standing there with tears running down his cheeks looking at all the pollution on his once pristine land. This has been building for some time but the corrective actions should start now to save as much as possible of the delta. It will be hard because of the weak economy but it needs to see a stepped up agenda to save as much as possible for the future generations who will appreciate it more as they become older. That would make a nice Legacy for our kids.

Dew yo u got it it’s a real sore spot now.

alabamaoutlaw, is it just me or were some comments you and I made on this topic removed?

I too am disappointed in the fresh water fishing in the Mobile/Tensaw Delta.  I too have tried several times in the past to get the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources to at least acknowledge there is a problem with bass fishing in the Delta.  Historically their response has been, 1) We will study the Delta for 5 or 6 years to determine what the problems are, if in fact there are problems, 2) In all things nature you will have good periods and bad periods.  We are just going through one of the bad periods now. 3)  tests show we have plenty of bass in the Delta.

i don’t believe the monies collected is being used to support the delta it’s being used to buy new trucks, boats, atvs not to preservation all fishing and hunting lic incresed.registration of boats increase along with fines when people are caught braking the law.where are all these monies going
Most of the forever wild was gifted. It has been turned in to a money making interest instead of a defender of wildlife If the delta dies where are all the animals to go.During worsening time the animals will be under higher hunting pressure with people trying to feed their families.During the last depression the whitetail was hunted near extinction in the south and it could happen again. It’s time for a change in policy in the mansion or time for another keeper
We need an environmentalist to stop the deteration and start remedeaton ASAP
Does anyone have contact info on Mr.Ladd?
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to All

Carl they raised all boat registerations this year. But Lawley has a nasty attitude when confronted about the facts. I live on a small creek and have seen it destroyed be siltation and erosion Low dissolved oxygen ,there are no fish at all left in this once viable watershed I am working with every agency in the world that has an e-mail address wheather they want to or not staying on them is they only way i know i,ve contacted everybody from the gov. on down .The entire delta is changing but there are days when you could walk bank to bank without getting your feet wet twenty years ago if your boat brke down you could be stuck until family come looking whole lot of people and nutria .They are working the banks over and the grass.Maybe start csome ratting will help the delta’

Sadly, I think our rivers and streams are beyond reclamation. We have gone too far. Even since I moved here in 1979, I’ve noticed a VISIBLE decline in several species. It’s too bad. The estuaries in Fl, AL, MS and LA are essential to our fisheries. And they are being ruined.

It seems the department has become more revenue income orientated in recent years instead of conservation being the focus when it comes to the delta. But it might be because of revenue that this is happening. We need to protect what we have left and take steps to increase the protection gradually even if this might take increasing some fees on boat licenses and such.GREAT JOB JENE~
