MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say seven people were killed
in an early morning accident between a state prison van and a
tractor-trailer rig.
Witnesses said the van burst into flames on impact, leaving the
vehicle almost unrecognizable.
The crash happened Friday morning at about 6 a.m. on an isolated
stretch of U.S. 82, about 20 miles southeast of Montgomery.
Department of Corrections spokesman Brian Corbett said the DOC
driver was carrying six job applicants from the state prison near
Union Springs to another prison.
Troopers believe the truck driver was not critically injured.
Montgomery Mayor Bobby Bright described the crash as
"horrendous." A trooper spokesman said it was "very high-impact
crash."
A section of U.S. 82 remains blocked off about three miles from
the wreck site in both directions, with traffic being detoured.
The cause of the crash was not immediately determined.
