A woman cooking chicken started a house fire that killed her friend.

According to Mobile Fire-Rescue, 22-year-old Ruthie Kimbrough was cooking at her Chrichton home on Frederick Street around 10:20 Sunday night. She went to the bathroom. When she came back, there was a grease fore on the stove. She yelled for everyone to get out of the house, grabbed her daughter and escaped.

Once outside, Chris Kimbrough noticed his friend Carlos Moton was not with the group. He tried to break down a side door near the kitchen, but couldn't get in the house. Kimbrough suffered 2nd degree burns on his right arm and a cut on his left arm.

Firefighters found Moton's body in the utility room. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death but firefighters believe Moton was over come by the smoke and heated fire gases.

The fire, which has been ruled accidental, caused $60,000 in damage.

Mobile Fire-Rescue says a woman left food unattended on the stove. Three people, including the woman's daughter made it out. Carlos Moton did not.
