MOBILE, Alabama - The tough economy has hit the Mobile County District Attorney's Office hard. District Attorney John Tyson Jr. says as many as 15 employees were laid off Friday. Tyson says his office has been dealing with state budget cuts and they were not able to replace a major grant. Now, they've lost about a third of their staff. Despite the smaller work force, Tyson says they'll be able to get the job done, "the remainders of us have to work faster, smarter ,better and more efficient. We are still figuring out exactly how were going to do that but I'm confident that we will be able to do it and maintain a level of service," said Tyson.
On top of the layoffs, Tyson says they also will not be replacing 4 assistant district attorneys who resigned, another who retired, and 3 support personell they lost during this fiscal year.

We got a new Police Chief; maybe with the shake down in the DA’s office the crime rate will lower. Also, BamaBob, I thought you thought as I read the Register. Thanks for the post.

Couldn’t the mayor give the DA’s office that $200,000 that he is holding back for the Gulf Coast Classic?  I think that the money would be better spent by helping law enforcement than by promoting a ball game. However, the mayor claims that crime is down in Mobile.  Maybe the DA’s office didn’t need those people, because there wasn’t much for them to do anymore? JMO

The people that were laid off were those who dealt with people writng bad checks, there job was important but not as important as some of the others, apparently its ok to write bad checks in Mobile.

Ya know, it is kind of strange to look at the front page of the Register and see that we are becoming the murder capital of the country.  Then just below that article we see massive cuts in the DA’s office.  That doesn’t send out a very good message.

Didn’t the DA get an emergency loan from the County, City, or both last year to keep them going?  I guess that ran out, huh?

Is that true ick?  I would have to sue someone if my reputation had been damaged that much over nothing.  Some things a person can get over and move on, but that kind of stuff is not one of them.

bob, all charges were dropped. he did not come back to work because of the BS city ways and he doen’t have to work anyway. he has money and told them to stick there job i’m going fishing.

The guy that had the late night FBI raid at his house resigned.  Whatever became of that guy?

That’s a whole lot of people in a relatively small department.  I wonder if they will have to reschedule trials.

Yep the police arrest them… make the headline and the public forgets about the case… The DA office then takes over… and prosecutes.. very hard job.. not nearly as much money as the person defending the scum… and the state sure does fund the appointed lawyers…

So next time your house is broken into or you are rob on the street..or god forbid a member of your family is murdered.. remember these serious cut backs… there are good folks leaving.. and good folks left trying to do a serious job that affects the publics safety… so boowhoo to you Mom2AngelBaby..

yeah but this s the guy who is trying to keep the thugs and murders in check and in jail. dont want it getting like new orleans or like mobile was earlier in the last century. in the 80s and 90s there were a lot of murders out in the no mans land of the causeway. keep him staffed and keep him running. they are doing a better job than we think, imagine it without them. wonder who resigned?

Maybe now they will use their time and assets with more care. PAst activity as shown a complete lack of management
