The Mobile County District Attorney's Office expects Richard Hollingsworth to have a bond hearing Thursday.
Mobile Police have charged Hollingsworth with capital murder in the shooting death of Mobile Police Officer Brandon Sigler.
Chief Assistant District Attorney Nicki Patterson said, "We, of course, will be arguing for no bond."
Mobile Deputy Police Chief James Barber explained why.
Barber said, "When the officers did spot the vehicle he (Hollingsworth) was occupying, a short pursuit did follow and he had made certain arrangements to pack up, and he appeared to be leaving town."
Patterson said, "Capital murder in the state of Alabama carries two possible penalties: death or life in the penitentiary without the possibility of parole."
When asked if the D.A.'s Office has decided to pursue the death penalty, Patterson said, "We haven't even had a chance to look at that."
Officer Sigler was what's called a courtesy officer for the Tyler Ridge Apartments.
Courtesy officers provide security and help tenants for reduced rent.
Barber said, "Its not clear to us at this point whether he (Officer Sigler) became aware of the unruly situation or of this dispute that was occurring outside by hearing it, or whether somebody knocked on his door or if somebody contacted him by telephone. We do know that it did not go through our communication system, and, so, he was responding to it as a courtesy officer, but he was acting in his capacity as a law enforcement officer."
But as a result of the shooting, will there be any changes in police policy concerning courtesy officers?
Barber said, "No, we don't see any changes at all. What we had here was a situation that should have been easily dispersed by the officer."
For now, police officers mourn in their own special way.
Barber said, "You'll see a lot of the guys are wearing the black band across the badge that indicates a fallen officer. You also see that our flags are flying at half staff. In this case, you had an officer who dedicated his life to service."

Yeah all officers are given a take home car not too long after they are out of FTO, which is where they ride along with a training officers for the first couple of months to get more experienced. You are also required to have a take home car in order to become a courtesy officer at any apartment complex. I know this because my husband and I had to wait until he got his take home car for him to be the courtesy officer where we live now.

There may be some departments that don’t have take home cars-but all the patrol officers do, so would any department that would require being called out in the middle of the night-like robbery, homocide, etc…Are you sure you read it as MPD? I am “thinking” Prichard cut back to save money-though in truth, the expense of providing a take home car is nominal, and makes the officer more readily accessable in the event they are needed STAT. For instance, if they DIDN’T have take home cars, they would have to drive their PERSONAL car to the precinct, pick up an “available” car if there were any, then respond. Back in the day when they did not have take homes-you had officer’s standing around waiting for a shared car, because the previous shift was tied up on a call. Not good logistically or safety wise.jmo

And there have been instances when all officers are called in for duty.

i thought mobile didn’t let them take car home to save money. didn’t i read that a few months ago?

I am begining to believe that not only did he know Sigler was police, his girlfriend knew he worked there, and yet he carried a pistol, which he is to young to possess, with the sole purpose of retaliating for the previous run in his girlfriend had with other girl, when he approached Sigler he drew and fired killing the officer. Tried to escape, chase ending in wreck, girlfriend injured in wreck, he’s apprehended with drugs, stolen weapon, arrested charged with murder. Then comes sob story, hires or appointed an attorney (rocket scientist) who believes jury pool might “be tainted” do you think so. WOW No bail. To follow the rest of the story at trial.

OK, ick-I misunderstood…

All officer’s (as far as I know) have a take home car. And since Officer Sigler was in patrol, his would have been CLEARLY marked-unlike someone who works in an area where they drive the unmarkeds. There should have been NO question.

Anytime minimay…LE families are always there to help…

I also get what you were saying Ick, it was just a reference to try and be as safe as possible. Thanks for the support.

Also I am sure that you can gather information and assess a situation much better than I since you and your husband have been apart of LE for much longer than my husband and I. So at least I know I can post to you for some advice if needed.

All the signs were there to display that Officer Sigler was not a threat to him or anyone else. The only threat he could have given is the threat of getting him caught with the drugs and possession of the weapon.

I agree with you Seek. As I had stated in other post if the girl lived there then she knew he was the courtesy officer. Plus an officer can not become a courtesy officer unless they have their take home squad car. So therefore there was a squad car present.

you missed the point rmseek, put it on when you leave the apt. to do the courtesy thing. put it by your gun so you can put it on out the door. be safe guys.
