University officials estimated a crowd of about 8,000 came out to watch.
It may be April but it looked more like September at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.
There was football on the field, fans in the stands and tailgaters in the parking lot.
Elise Jones was one of them.
Jones said, "We brought the traditional hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, salsa, pretty much the works."
If that name sounds familiar, Elise Jones is the wife of head football coach Joey Jones.
And the fans in the stands came in all ages.
April Deen said, "I think they have a great turnout, fabulous, fabulous, turnout. Its going to do great things for Mobile."
Jerry Champion talked about the USA gear he was wearing.
Champion said, "This jersey came from 1981, I believe, and the hat from 1991. Everything is old like me."
April Deen said, "I think they have a great turnout, fabulous, fabulous, turnout. Its going to do great things for Mobile."
But the whole evening may have been summed up best by one tailgater.
When asked if he was excited about the season, he said, "Yeah, I think South's going to win."
