The Mayor and Police Chief announced Monday crime is down in Mobile and they're putting 31 new officers on the street. City leaders say FBI statistics show overall crime is down 12 percent in the city, and violent crime is down 9 percent. But, we took a closer look, and it's all in how you look at the numbers, while crimes like rape, burglary and car theft are significantly down from 2006. Homicides and robberies are up, " the goal is to have the lowest crime rate in the country, that's what we want to be, that's our goal, so any comparison you see with us is really in that vein for us to have the absolute best community in the country as it relates to crime, and that's where we're headed as a city," said Mobile Mayor Sam Jones. County Commissioners Stephen Nodine and Mike Dean released a statement in response to the crime announcement. They say while "the latest crime statistics released by the City of Mobile are certainly encouraging. They also are quite contrary to the story we’ve been hearing from top city and police officials as recently as just a couple of days ago," said Dean and Nodine.

If crime is down in mobile they still have a long way to go. There is a lot of it reported on the news daily.  Does one get the idea that politics could be an influence in this report.

Well everything may be down in the “City of Mobile” but I bet if you look at the stats for Mobile County numbers they would look a lot different.

It was on the news this morning that Fairhope is paying over $19 per hour to start, and they have some openings. I wonder how many Mobile officers will apply?

If crime was really down, would all the new officers be needed?  Any statistics on how many officers leave the police department for higher paying jobs elsewhere?

Thanks for the good reporting KRG…glad to see that some people in Mobile are smart enough to see the truth. Crunch more numbers and you’ll see that this is ALL politically based, and has no basis on the overall numbers that would truly show that “crime” is down. Just look at who was at the news conference. All “elected” officials. Crime is NOT down in Mobile.

Seems to me our city leaders must have recently read the textbook, “How to Lie with Statistics”.

I feel so much better knowing that it is more likely I will be killed instead of raped and robbed instead of burglarized in our city.

As far as the crime figures are concerned, everyone knows that you can manipulate numbers to prove anything you want. In direct contradiction of what the mayor told people today, it has been widely published that the crime rate in Mobile is extremely high and is rising rapidly.  Downplaying these statistics in the hopes of winning the election is wrong, and making yourself the savior instead of putting the proper credit on the law enforcement agencies actually responsible for the people’s safety is also wrong. Come on - SOMEBODY give these city leaders some competition. We need change in Mobile!! JMO

Crime rate goes down, crime coverage goes up?

Well, there seems to be more robberies, people being assaulted and robbed right in their own car in their own driveway, and even more murder and bodies being thrown out all over the place than ever before.  It makes me wonder how much crime isn’t even reported in the news THAT we don’t know about.

It is a little hard to believe crime is down when every day the news is filled with one crime after another and many of those are violent!
