An early morning accident forced police to shutdown Interstate 65 southbound in Mobile, between Airport Boulevard and Dauphin Street. Mobile police say two vehicles collided in the accident, which happened shortly after 3:00 am. Investigators say the force of the accident was so intense, it sent a guardrail from the interstate over a fence and on to the side of the I-65 Service Road.

Three people were taken to the hospital. No word on their conditions.

Mobile Police and Alabama State Troopers are investigating the accident. They are also inspecting the road for damage.

Around the same time, two vehicles crashed in the northbound lanes of Interstate 65, in the same area. No other details have been released.

Hi you all, you all make valid points regarding speeding, some truck drivers and Talking on cell phones. However to play devils advicate, why has the discussion started out bashing truck drivers, I may have missed it but I didn’t see any truck drivers invovled in this accident. I am not a truck dirver myself. I can imagine alot of accidents involving 18 wheelers are not the fualt of the trcuker himself. I have like many of you may have seen alot of time are the POV’s drive like idiots around truck drivers. It seems like POV drivers forget how to drive around the big trucks when they come up to them.

As for the cell phones, I can not agree more. I wish they would ban the use of cell phones while driving. I personally have worked many accidents where the driver admitted he or she was on the phone when the accident happend.

Ok, thats my little 2 cents worth.

To solve this problem we, the citizens of Mobile, need to address our Police chief, and his staff, and tell them in no uncertain terms that we as a city have had it with the “traffic enforcement division” of the MPD. They DO NOT enforce ANY traffic laws, unless they HAVE TO. I’ve seen the MPD for years look the other way, and let people do whatever they want in their vehicles. It’s the biggest joke in this city. Everybody knows you can almost always drive 65 on Schillinger rd, 60 on Cottage Hill rd, and whatever speed you can on the interstates here in our city limits. Get off your cell phone, turn on the radar, and open your eyes.

And, most deputies do not run radar. I wish that they would.

That may be true about local truckers.  I drive from MS to Mobile almost every day and it is the long-haul truckers that are the worst offenders at speeding and I see sheriff deputy cars all over the place, but the truckers slow down just enough to get by the deputies and then pour on the gas again.

While on this subject, i wa behind and unmarked Mobile Police care the other evening and he did not obey the first rule of the road, no blinker, speeding (reckless driving) I started to get his tag #.  3:00 am Drunk driving, racing? People using cell phones get over or off the road because most of you can not multi task…

AMEN to the cell phone ban while driving.

Allot of the speeding trucks around here are locals usually moving loads around the Mobile area and are being paid by the load. This concept of speeding to get that one extra load for the day will not make any difference once they kill someone. Lawyers love trucking companies;)

It is Mobile drivers.  I have lived all over the USA and Canada and the worst drivers are in Mobile AL and Nashville TN—both in states without a mandatory drivers education law.

People in Mobile need to get off their cell phones while driving, as well as not put on makeup or eating and driving.  They are not able to multi-task well.

And the truckers need to slow down.  I can go the speed limit of 70 mph on I-10 and truckers pass going over 75 mph.  I tried to catch up with one that passed me and he had to be going 85 MPH!

<stepping down from my soap box!>

My favorite one is the ones in the left hand lane going about 15mph under the speed limit and determined to stay there along side one in the right hand lane going about the same speed.grin
We certainly have our share of bad drivers, but I don’t think anymore than most other places. The worst I can remember would be New Orleans and Atlanta but that could have been due to the difference in populations.

Not all mobile drivers lousy.
They are inconsiderate, rude, drive too fast, and expect everyone else on the road to yield to them.
Other problems I see, is that many people talk on the cell phone while driving, and don’t pay attention to what they are doing.
If you have problems multi tasking, don’t talk on the phone and drive.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Alabama passing a cell phone law.
