Bon Secour Volunteer Fire Chief Karl Bingert has dedicated his time to protecting the community. Now, the veteran firefighter has another challenge he's concerned about. Coyotes are making themselves more visible in South Baldwin County. The packs are getting larger and the predators seem less intimidated by humans.

"We're seeing more of them," says Binger. "I don't know if it's the dry weather or what it is but you need to be aware of them. If you see them around your yard, make sure don't let the kids out and leaving the animals out if you happen to see them around."

Coyote sightings have also been reported in Foley and Gulf Shores near Ft. Morgan Road.

"As with any wild animal you want to keep your distance, but if you leave them alone you should be fine," says Jackie Isaccs. Isaccs is a biologist with the Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge. "They're going to eat things like small rabitts and rodents and small animals so if you have a small pet, it's a good idea to keep them indoors."

Locally, there has been at least one recent report of a coyote killing a family pet.

Watch your self Claycity! It probably will not be much longer before you hear of an attack or attacks on humans at night, since they seem to be becoming less afraid and more aggressive in packs.I don’t believe they would be much to worry about if they came from a domesticated line and gone wild, but these came from the “EAT OR BE EATEN ” line.If you go out at night, try not to be on their menu.grin

saw on yesterday. big as a sheppard, not scared. dogs not going out at night even in the yard anymore

They use to have a bounty on them. They need to be managed just like all the wildlife. If there numbers are to many, kill them off until they are in a range that doesn’t harm the other wildlife. If they pose a hazard to urban areas, trap them and get them out. If you put them down big deal

Coyotes will bring Rabis,Parvo, red mange, and all sorts of perasites with them due to the consumption of carrier animals and wide ranging terretories.I have seen then poisioned with 1080 boxes and whole cattle carcasses poisioned when it was still legal. There are some controls that are greusome but are still being used to control the critter.I do not trust them Have a 17 hmr that works wonders on them.

Just like the cartoon version"Wiley coyote”,they are wiley and learn quick.A five foot chain link fence is not much of an obstacle to them.If they don’t feel able to jump it,they climb it in nothing flat.If you want to see a funny sight you should see one perched on the top rail of a fence, trying to get a better view or trying to decide which way they want to go.Looks like a big dang hairy vulcher sitting up there.grin
They are not to be under estimated on what they can do and when in a pack give them the respect that’s due,for your own and other’s safety.I suppose eventually we’ll have a coyote rodeo, sort of like with the nutria rodeo they did have.

Most conflicts result from people providing coyotes with food, intentionally or not. Fundamental to resolving negative encounters with wild animals is reducing attractants. Keep companion animals indoors at night and feed them indoors as well; walk dogs on leashes, keep refuse containers inaccessible to animals, and keep other food sources like fallen fruit and birdseed off the ground; these are easy ways to reduce conflicts. Unless people take responsibility to remove attractants to discourage unwanted wildlife, negative encounters with coyotes and other predators will occur and animals will be destroyed. Love ‘em or hate ‘em coyotes are here to stay. Learn more about mitigating human/coyote conflicts at http://www.ProjectCoyote.org. When they breed up with dogs they are called a coy-dog and some of them weigh in at fifty plus pounds and are more than a match for a much larger animal because of the pack attack .AND YES they will dig under, climb over or jump a five foot fence to get at a small dog or cat all it cares about is that it is something to eat.If they can’t find live prey they will scavange from the roadside. If you have a small pet or small child in a fenced yard watch them close these things are the great survivors The native Americans think they will be that last living animal on earth. They are very smart and fearless

maybe the coyotes ate my phone line yesterday. got a friend who has a cross between a coyote and a chow. now that must have been one mean coyote. pretty dog though, never understood the coyote ugly thing, they are really not that bad looking of an animal, course i only have seen pictures, havent been that close to one. wonder if they really will come in my yard fence to get my dog?

sorry, inter net and phnes were out for 24 hours. between fairhope and reallt pensacola but surely summerdale (Hwy59) there are plenty of coyotes. you can hear them when the big fire truck responds to an emergency and they howl woth the trucks. never gotten close to one. been about 50 yards from a fox though, they run away. if i DO run into some i hope i am a good shot and i hope there areent more than 17 of them.

My kids keep buying me phones i don’t know how many i have dropped in the creek ,but they get me another one.And if i don’t carry it everywhere i get that surmon ,Why didn’t you answer the phone.I hate that this animal has invaded this part of the country. If they get started they are impossible to get rid of.
