Mobile Police say Brandon Sigler was one of dozens of others on the force working as a Courtesy Officer.

Cindy Babin with Autumn Woods Apartments says their officer began in May. She says the officer's responsibilities include making sure doors are locked and keeping the noise level down. Some apartments reduce their officer's rent in exchange for their services. Mobile Police say the job is after hours but the protection is always in the name of the law.

"When you become a police officer you're a police officer all the time whether or not you're actually working here or off the clock, you're still an officer,"Said Christopher Levy, a spokesman for Mobile Police. "The response time is the biggest thing Ibelieve for us because I can immediately have someone down here to take care of my situation,"Said Babin.

Mobile Police officers must submit an application with the police department in order to become a Courtesy Officer.

rmseek, you said it:  “but I would think that the “ambush” story would have been TOP NEWS throughout the media. I realize that to protect and build the case, the police are not going to give out every detail at this point, but hey-that was worth reporting. I am glad that Ms. Kramer did. Good job!”

This angle as well as the girlfriend link are going to provide the backbone of the state’s case.  I wouldn’t be a bit surprised if she’s not brought in soon and charged with aiding in the commitment of a felony.  Just like someone driving the “getaway car” in the commission of a crime, she is just as culpable as the shooter.

I hope all officers who work these extra jobs will take this as a wake-up call.  Back when Officer Kennedy was shot doing the same work, times weren’t nearly so bad as they are now. Dope wasn’t rampant like it is today and the courts didn’t listen to cry-baby pleas like they do today.  I just can’t muster sympathy for him.  He had his chance(s) and chose his road

Yeah I do agree that a lot of the key points and some of the most important information is just being cast in the background of all this media. But, as you stated they have to be careful what they say and how they say it because of the fact that they still have a trial pending. At this point he is just an “accused” cop killer. As much as it sickens me to even think of calling him just a suspect. I know that there has probably been a lot left unsaid because of a trial still pending. That is ok though the trial will come and the evidence will not have changed, not matter how much they may try to humanize this guy, I do not think that will make a difference.

Jillian Kramer-staff reporter at Mobile Press Register has done an EXCELLENT job reporting about this. I found the artilce where Deputy Chief Barber called this an ambush online at al.com, along with his comments-which I quoted an d paraphrased. There is also a blurb on another article, which does mention thuggies mysapce, but in addition to his “music” also reports that pictures posted have him being drunk/high in his comments. This is just my opinion, but I would think that the “ambush” story would have been TOP NEWS throughout the media. I realize that to protect and build the case, the police are not going to give out every detail at this point, but hey-that was worth reporting. I am glad that Ms. Kramer did. Good job!

rmSeek says, “the officer had already resolved the conflict… Said girlfriend left, then came back with thugdog.”  In reading this, it makes me wonder if gf might have been angry with the officer in the way the conflict was resolved and went to fetch bf.  They then could have returned, intending to “show” the officer that he couldn’t order them around—or more.  Why DID the gf return with bf?  I think LE really needs to get in her face and make her tell what she knows and even charge her with conspiracy.  I think she is more than just a witness; she could be an accomplice in a plan they both hatched up.  She’s obviously no lady or she wouldn’t have been involved in fisticuffs.  She’s obviously no a lady or she wouldn’t choose thugboy for a “boyfriend”.  Neither of them shows evidence of proper upbringing.  I could say what she is, but I think she’s made it pretty obvious. Two of a kind.

Officers do carry their ID everywhere they go. Mine has his in his wallet, as well as his badge that he wears on duty. Key things that are being missed here-the officer had already resolved the conflict,in which he would have identified himself to those involved. Said girlfriend left, then came back with thugdog. Do you think she didn’t tell him the security(off duty) officer had been there? Do you think his patrol car was not visible somewhere on the lot? He was “yelled” at to leave. Ooooo, that’s so scary! Had he been confronted by a real threat, do you think they would have told him to leave? Really, how many reports do we see out of high crime areas, where someone who is shot is given the “option” of leaving first? My interpretation from the latest statements of officials is that this pos KNEW EXACTLY what he was doing. I will be glad when trial begins.

Yeah the thugs do not have the gun out plain as day for everyone to see when they are walking around. They usually keep the weapon concealed because they do not want anyone to know that they have, especially if they are planning to do some harm to a person. Why would a thug walk up to someone with their weapon plain as day giving the other person the chance to shoot at them first? That just would not make any sense. Another point, why hide and lure the person over there if they are a threat? Wouldn’t you want them to stay as far away from you as possible? I would think so, and yes this individual would still given the same charge even if it was not an officer. If it was self-defense as this young man is saying then the right thing to do would to have called LE after the shooting to let them know that he had to use self-defense to keep the subject away, but that was not the case he knew what he did and that is why he ran and that is why he tried to dispose of the murder weapon.

Look at the latest statement in the Press-Register. It was an “ambush.” This punk knew it was a police officer and deliberately, hid behind his truck door, then reached across his girlfriend when she told him the officer was there and shot through the passenger door. It was PREMEDITATED murder in my opinion.

Also, according to the article-others may be facing charges as well. He would have been charged with capital murder no matter who he shot-because it was cold-blooded, premeditated, murder.

Oldmobile is right-most people don’t walk around with a holstered gun on their hip. Even the argument that he was “scared” is lame. If he “thought” he was dealing with some thug-brother, then why would said gun be in a holster. Really, how many thugs do you see walking around with HOLSTERED guns. Nope, doesn’t happen.

First I’d like to say m heart is with the family of Sigler…May he rest in peace and the news media let him do so…so the family can move on and deal with recovery

Even if that is shooting the officer to get away. The only thing that officers are obligated to wear when doing a job , such as courtesy officer, is their badge, which is usually clipped on their belt. With officer Sigler already dealing with the situation earlier in the day, he had already I.D’d himself to some of the parties that were at the scene of the shooting.

I get the points that all of yall are trying to make. If you see a man just walk up to you with a gun< on his hip, with a stern voice, yeah it is going to put a little bit of “fear”, in you, but not necessarily, a fear that is justifiable to “defend yourself”. Officer Sigler never had any contact with Hollingsworth, so I do not think he gave the Officer time to Identify himself. His girlfriend that told him to “watch out” for Sigler cause he was heading their way, knew he was the courtesy officer there, or even at least that there was an courtesy officer on the premises.  Also an officer wearing a shirt or so forth to easily be identified, is not always to their advantage. If you are a criminal and know if that officer catches you you will be in jail for a long time or the rest of your life, they are likely to take whatever measures they can to escape.
