The Mobile County School District can finally take Mayor Sam Jones' annexation promise to the bank.

This morning the city council put their stamp of approval on a $2 million commitment made last August.

Some council members expressed frustration saying the mayor should have told them about the promise before making public. Nonetheless, they voted unanimously to pay the school district a half-cent sales tax lost when the city annexed part of Theodore and Tillmans Corner.

"It was vital for us to go ahead and even reluctantly adopt the mayor's position as ours because the city's reputation is at stake," said Councilman Clinton Johnson.

Wade Perry, a spokesperson for the Alabama Education Association, says he's pleased with the council's decision. "Whatever kind of power struggle they were having, whether it was with the school board or with the mayor, it was not right to get the school employees and the teachers caught in the middle of it," said Perry.

The council made one amendment to the Mayor's original proposal. Instead of agreeing to a five year commitment, the council agreed to one year and said they'd re-evaluate their financial situation after that.

I agree with you, mom on mission.  I just hope that everyone who believes in honesty and commitment will get out and help get rid of some of these problems spending our hard earned money.  And yep, I haven’t heard any of the higher ups offering to take a pay cut, even temporarily, to help out the lower wage earners.

Everyone needs to remember the “ACTIONS” of the officials not their “words” when casting their vote. Apparently it’s okay to make promises that you don’t intend to keep while serving the people and running for office. I was always taught that a person was only as good as their word. Sadly most of what we hear and see in the Mobile Government has been untruths and they get away with it.

I can’t think of any improvements that Mobile has completed.  Florida street has been in a mess for over a year.
As for as, what they are spending the money on???
Who knows what the actual cost of the moon pie and new year’s eve was?  Did we make enough money to pay the bills?  How many people came just because of the hype?  How many are planning to return for new year’s eve next year?  I don’t know, but I don’t have a lot of respect for the government after this last year.

Watch for the coverage on the change regarding the present laws governing Private dirt roads. It’s going to interesting. Rep. Spencer Collier and Rep. Jim Barton and Senator Rusty Glover and others have promised only to do the best that they can. That is all that a person can ask or promise. By the way we are only asking for the roads to be GRATED with proper drainage not PAVED like the County keeps telling people. I can’t wait to see how the County tries to spin it this time. But we will be ready for them this time. All of our State Reps. are supporting this but the County is against it I guess they are afraid that they will have to start working for our tax money. Imagine that

You right! Thanks mom for your mission. Be Blessed!

Thanks for your comments. May be people will remember this on election day. They didn’t when it came to the Commissioner’s re-election he even admitted to not being honest with us on TV 5 Tiffany covered the story and he was still re-elected back into office. Go figure.

Prayers are crucial, at this point. As always. Those in charge now have deep pockets and are not afraid to try to fill them. The best bet is to remove you children from public scrwelles and put them in schools where prayer and morals are tought. Do you think those in the council or mayors office go to public school?

My question is what is the city and county doing with all of our tax money? The school system is beyond broke they have stated. Our roads are some of the worst in the State I have been told. We get rid of one School Superintendent because of money then we hire some one else for more money with bonuses. With all of his cuts I haven’t heard him offer a cut in his pay just to get rid of our teachers that we don’t have enough now. The Mobile County, City Gov. is a mess. I don’t know how they keep getting back in office. I did vote but not for any one that was re-elected in Mobile. Mobile is beautiful just a little lost right now. we just have to keep saying our prayers.

Different is just a polite way of saying screwed up! As a 20+ year resident I see the “Change”!

I just moved here three years ago so I don’t know what it was like before. I do remember a lot of parents moving to Baldwin County because of the schools. But to put it politely Mobile government is should I say “different”.
