Coast Guard Looking For Missing Surfer

The Coast Guard is searching for a missing surfer.

17-year-old John Stevens went missing Saturday while surfing with his grandfather off the coast of Navarre Beach.

Shortly after 9:30 p.m., the Coast Guard launched an HH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter from Air Station New Orleans. Sector Mobile diverted the Coast Guard Cutter Cobia and crew, and Station Pensacola launched a small boat and crew.

The Coast Guard is continuing its search Sunday with the helicopter from Air Station New Orleans, the Cobia and a small boat and crew from Coast Guard Station Destin.

HH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter-This system provides automatic flight control. At the pilot’s direction, the system will bring the aircraft to a stable hover 50 feet (15 m) above a selected object. This is an important safety feature in darkness or inclement weather. Selected search patterns can be flown automatically, freeing the pilot and copilot to concentrate on sighting & searching the object. This platform with night vision capabilities would be the one to use if you were blown out to sea on a surf board.
