For now, the money's still there and that means a lot of car dealers are looking for clunkers. The popular, but cash strapped, “Cash for Clunkers” program continued through this weekend. Some Mobile dealerships were still offering $3,500 or $4,500 hundred dollars on trade-ins of cars with low fuel economy. Dealerships we spoke today, Sunday, August 02, 2009, with say they'll continue as long as the government says the money's there. For some, the program has been a shot in the arm.

“Obviously with Toyota offering over 10 models with 30 miles per gallon or better it's been really great for us because of the fuel economy differences,” says Palmer’s Toyota sales associate Tim Burgard. An extra $2 billion was moving through Congress Friday. Some dealers said they were having trouble getting the paperwork to the federal government for reimbursement.

The government is giving the people their own money back (taxes) to buy a vehicle they can’t afford so that the auto industry can repay the government for their bailout. Then, you’ll see a “subprime-like” default on a whole lot of auto loans. Yep, sounds like a plan to me!!

Does anyone even come close to understanding this deal?  It sounds a little crazy to me.

Us taxpayers that choose not to buy a car at this time are paying for this sooner or later.  How is that a good thing?  Who really gets the benefit from all these tax dollars we don’t have?  The dealers, or the manufacturers?  Is any govt. official keeping track of where this money is going, i.e. Detroit or Japan?
