An officer who was hurt while on his last shift with the Bayou La Batre Police Department is out of the hospital. 21-year-old Timothy Byrd of Semmes was hospitalized for three days after he was exposed to an ammonia leak. It happened Sunday morning at a seafood shop on Tram Avenue. His mom says her son is doing much better, "when he talked to me you could smell ammonia and I actually thought that they had been cleaning the hospital with it and he kind of laughed, you know, just to try to make me feel better and he said that's me that you smell," said Officer Byrd's mother, Tanya Byrd. She says her son will continue being a police officer, he's just trying to get closer to home.

I am glad he is going to be OK. I have heard that too, southfan, and it wouldn’t surprise me…with all the stuff that goes into making meth, its a wonder anyone even survives to be around to ?smoke it,or do they inject it-I don’t know. Anyway, I have also heard of some officers that nearly missed getting blown up when they went to investigate a meth lab and it exploded.

You know, we think of meth labs being primarily in the “rural” areas, but that isn’t so much the case any more. Even some areas of town that are usually more prevalent for crack, are now having meth labs.

Did the news ever report if this ammonia leak was thought to be because of someone stealing it to make meth,or just an accident?

Wow, the danger these people are faced with. I understand that officers have become fatally ill from their encounters with Meth Labs. Anyone know if it is true that those substances can make you ill just by coming in contact?
