- Mobile City Councilman Fred Richardson, Clinton Johnson and William Carroll each want to give $25,000 from their discretionary funds to support the Gulf Coast Classic.
- Councilman Reggie Copeland is opposed to the idea. "It's absolutely absurd ... Where's that money going? I wanna see some checks. I wanna see some balances. Accountability is what it's all about."
- Organizers say last month's game between Alabama State and Southern University attracted more than 25,000 people. Copeland says fewer than 11,000 actually walked through the gates of Ladd Peebles Stadium.
- Councilmen Richardson, Johnson and Carroll told News 5 they'll wait for the results of an economic impact study before throwing in the money.

The Mobile City Council is discussing whether to approve $75,000 in funding for next year's Gulf Coast Classic.

Back in October, the Council approved $250,000 for the 2008 Classic, but not before a heated debate that included accusations of racism.

"You think that the minority community cannot produce the numbers to produce the economic effect that is needed to make this work unlike the GMAC Bowl," Councilman William Carroll said during the meeting on October 7th. "You have said it yourself in plain black and white."

Councilman Fred Richardson promised the money would help the game between Alabama State and Southern University at Ladd Peebles Stadium sell out. There were 9,000 more people in the stands than the year before, but the attendance was still about 15,000 shy of a sell out.

Will there be more chaos at today's council meeting? News 5's Tiffany Craig is there and will have the story tonight on News 5 at 6:00.

As far as the game is concerned, the money should go to the needy and the less fortunate.  Those three councilmen need to use this money for the greater good and not for selfish reasons. The game will take care of itself. The promoters of the game need to go after major sponsers, instead.

I would like to see where the money went too!  They didn’t need to spend it on the stadium, so what was it used for?

Yep, you’re probably right… 14,000 came to party in the parking lot, didn’t even buy a ticket for the game, and didn’t spend a dime while they were in Mobile.
There needs to be an investigation into how this money was spent and whose pocket it lined.

These people are working under the assumption that they just picked up millions with the new annexation.  They have not factored in the changing economic climate.  As more and more small businesses fail and the revenue from sales taxes decreases, the bigger the burden will be for the city to provide basic services.

As one goverment offical said a few years back” We’re not gonna go broke as long as we have the right to increase taxes”.At some point the piggy bank will become depleted and a increase in revenue will be needed to cover the free wheeling spending by cash addicted politicians and then these people will fade back into the back ground hoping people will forget how they got here and who was responsible.

14,000 must have been in the parking lot having a tailgate party.

What I really think is interesting is this comment from the news article:
“- Organizers say last month’s game between Alabama State and Southern University attracted more than 25,000 people. Copeland says fewer than 11,000 actually walked through the gates of Ladd Peebles Stadium.”
So—how many people purchased tickets to this game?  25,000 or 11,000?????

Where is the accountibility for the spending of the $250,000?  Where did the money go?  Why can’t the citizens of Mobile demand to see where the money went.
I was listening to the Uncle Henry show yesterday.  A guy called in and said the City invested $250,000 for the game.  The turnout (supposedly) was 25,000.  So that’s about $10 per person (not including the price the people paid for the tickets).  So “recoop” the City’s investment, each person would have to spent $110 dollars while they were here in Mobile seeing the game.  Do you think that happened?

Our local officials appear to be completely oblivious to what is happening in the world!  An economic Tsunami is building and will eventually reach all shores.  Mobile has already seen a dramatic increase in the unemployment rate, new construction has dropped to all time lows, the real estate market is very soft and new car sales are down.  All of these things mean revenue for the city.

In a few months we will be hearing about debts coming due, projected revenues being down and services being cut.  But, for now it is politics as usual and our officials are spending money like drunken sailors on a Saturday night!

It is time to re-assess all expenditures, focus on basic services and the maintenance of existing city facilities.  It is NOT the time to be spending thousands on moon pies and empty stadiums!!!!!!!

white cloud

I think the city council need’s to be replaced.
The taxpayer;s money needs to be spent on improvment’s for the city, not on ball games BS
