Brenda Slater can't believe her five year old niece is dead.

"She was found right here," says Slater who pointed to a spot behind a home on Leggett Avenue where Zoria Mauldin's body was found Wednesday night. "They say she was laying here on her face," she says.

Prichard police launched an investigation into the death after they realized the little girl did not die of natural causes, but today police said they believe the death was an accident.

Zoria's family says the little girl may have been reaching for a ball under a shed when a nail hanging from the shed punctured an artery her neck.

A spokesperson for the police department couldn't confirm the details of the story, but Zoria's mom says police took the nail as evidence.

Investigators will send the case to the Mobile County District Attorney to review.

Cicicamy my remarks about prayer not bringing her back probably were uncalled for, because you can never tell. The whole point I was trying to make was that I’ve seen a lot of neglect when it comes to the kids and their care. There are no perfect parents or grand parents, but there is a lot of room for improvement in us all and to point this out I don’t dodge.I don’t like to argue at all and I really try to state the truth as I see it.Southfan if you would like I could tell you how I adjusted my toilet to go to do what I mentioned on the water levels in the bowl.I’m not trying to be smart with you,I’ll tell you,no strings attached. All have a good day!

cici-I don’t normally like country music-but that song was beautiful-thanks for posting it. People always queestion a death, whether from a long-term illness, or an accident. You always wonder about what if’s, and if only’s…Again, my prayers are to the family…

Oh I do understand the point you are trying to make. I will agree that Carls remarks are uncalled for. But Arguing with people like that just gives them the attention they desire sadly enough. Children can not have 24/7 supervision, They will slip out from under you from time to time. Especially when you have multiple young children. Accidents happen, some avoidable, some not. This mother will live the rest of her life thinking about the what if’s and blaming herself. When it appears to had been a unfortunate accident.

I don’t know what you are talking about Southfan.Everything I’ve told you so far is the truth and my opinions on child care has not changed.Cicicamy arguing about a toilet bowl is silly and Southfan was trying to make a point about a toilet bowl and kids, the argument she was making just didn’t apply here.Cicicamy, praying is good for the soul but it will not bring this baby back, and to try to make it go away by ignoring some possible solutions to help prevent it from happening again isn’t going to help.As I said in one of my previous post on the subject,My heart felt condolences to the family of this baby.

cici, i do not mean to offend you. I am pointing out that carl and these others judge these parents by unreasonable standards. I am sick and tired of reading their blame and hearing the glass crash when they toss those rocks at glass houses.

There are many ways a child can be harmed. I am pointing out the obscure ways kids have died under the supervision of capable, safety concious parents. A nail in the neck severing an artery is pretty obscure!

He is acting as if he has the proprietorship on protecting kids. My BRAND NEW TOTO TOILET has more than one inch of water in it. There is no way his toilet has less than an inch of water in the bowl. What does he have some specially made toilet for his household use? And that’s not to mention the kid accidentally slipping in head first or the lid slamming shut on a child peeking in to explore!

Carl is lying and I am calling him on it.

A child has died and you people want to argue about a stupid toilet bowl lock? Trying to prove which of you are the better parent? Sickening! Grow up and gain some respect. To the family of this poor child, my prayers are with you during this tragic time.

I must not be getting across to you Southfan. They can’t drown in my bowls because of the low level when they are here, but that is far and away from being outside without constant supervision.I imagine kids could be safe in a junk yard if they have constant supervision. This mother may have been attentive but it only take a short period of time for things to get out of hand with the babys.

Carl you are a liar. Thanks for the proof. I am sure you have an inch of water in your toilet bowls. However, I will point out that children have drowned in them. It happens. They are called accidents.

So, carl, I take it you don’t have any toilet bowl locks to protect your kids from that contingency and real danger? You must not care about your kids possibly drowning in a toilet bowl. What did you say your hot water was set at?

Southfan what with your facination of toliet bowls? When the kids are on the potty we constantly check on them and if they disappear for a minute in the house we find out where they are.The water levels in the bowls are shallow enough that you would have to hold a child face down to drown,if you let them go unattended for that long that is.You can adjust the water level that sits in the bowl on our’s by how long you hold the handle down.
