A four year old child was struck and killed around 7:00 p.m. this evening (03/09/09) on US 98 near County Road 27 in the Barnwell community of Baldwin County. The child, William Austin Wood, of Foley, was apparently playing near the edge of the road and had walked into the roadway to retrieve an errant skateboard. A westbound 2007 Chevrolet Silverado driven by John Michael Burnette, 41, of Fairhope, was unable to stop before striking the child. The child was transported to Thomas Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Neither alcohol nor speed are believed to have contributed to the incident and no charges have been filed. The incident occurred at or very near sunset.

i agree why wasnt someone watching him…. my 3,4, and 8 year old are always within my sight and i know what they are doin at all times… i could not live with my self it had happen to me nor could i if i were the driver of the truck that struck the child… just horrible

This story is indeed tragic!
As horrible as the reality of this story, and as filled with emotions for all involved, pointing fingers to blame will not reverse the life events for this precious child.
I dont know this family. But, if it were me involved, I feel strongly to just respectfully request that we keep this child’d family in our thoughts and for those of us who pray, please keep the family in prayer too.
ALSO-I cannot imagine how difficult this incident would be for the driver—especially if this driver is humane in any way. We should also keep this driver in our prayers. He may have the most difficulties of all.
PEACE to both families. Our prayers are with you.

Who was responsible for this child? Why was a four year old out on a busy highway near dark or any other time for that matter? My guess is his mother was too busy doing something else!
