45 minutes... that's how long it took a Mobile County jury to convict Lam Luong. Luong is the Irvington father who's now guilty of tossing his four young children off the Dauphin Island Bridge in January 2008.The children's family was in the courtroom as the verdict was read.
After painful testimony and reliving a nightmare for 3 days, Kieu Phan has justice. Her brother-in-law Kam Phengsisomboun speaks for the family. "All we need to hear is the guilty part and she was happy with it. Just the tears of happiness and sadness in one."
This 23-year old mother has experienced loss that most will never know. First, she lost her four children and now her common law husband. "She's going through that emotional thing right now because it's 5 persons in her life that are gone."
In less than an hour, a Mobile County jury found Lam Luong guilty of tossing Ryan, Lindsey, Hannah and Danny off the bridge.
District Attorney John Tyson was on the prosecution team. "We've been forced to consider an unimaginable crime and as we go through the facts and the witnesses, the jury has reached the conclusion that we have and that is he is guilty of capital murder."
Luong showed no emotion when the verdict was read. His defense team had no reaction either.
The children's family will be back on Friday morning when the penalty phase of this trial starts. The jury will recommend life without parole or the death penalty for the convicted father.
Phengsisomboun says the family won't comment on what they want Luong's fate to be. "We're not gonna say what we want to happen but I'm sure everybody knows how the family feels and what we want it to be. People who do bad things get what they deserve."
Members of the jury will make their recommendation but the judge will ultimately decide Lam Luong's fate.
