As of late Thursday afternoon, a mother accused of leaving her 3 month old son in a hot car has not been charged in the case.

Gulf Shores police are investigating the incident, which happened around 10 a.m. at Target on Highway 59 in Gulf Shores.

According to Deputy Chief Keith Martin of Gulf Shores Fire Rescue, someone walking into the store noticed the baby and called 911. Witnesses told paramedics the infant was unresponsive and foaming at the mouth when he was discovered.

"As a mom, it just tears me up," said Jody Woodly, a shopper at the store. "I just can't believe the irresponsibility."

Martin says he does not know how long the infant was left alone, but he insists even a few minutes in a unairconditioned vehicle can be deadly.

"It's basically an oven. It basically, in essence, cooks you," said Martin. "Your core temperature starts to rise, and after it gets to a certain point, your body functions shut down."

Fortunately, paramedics were able to revive the baby. Even before he was rushed to the hospital, Martin says the infant had begun responding.

News Five's calls to the Gulf Shores Police Department were not returned Thursday.

The name of the mother has not been released.

Why do parents still “forget” their child is in the car? I have never forgotten either of mine were in the car. Why not use one of the mirrors you put on your back window so you can glance in the rear view mirror and see the child in the back. I know at 3 mths old the mother was probably exhausted from nighttime feedings but that is not an excuse. I dont see how anyone could do this but unfortunately this does happen. Thank goodness this was not a tragedy. The mother should have to take parenting classes as well as be charged. She could have killed her baby. Perhaps post partum depression was a part of it? Perhaps she planned it as a “escape” Some women do have very severe ppd that doesnt show until 6-8 weeks after baby is born from the hormones dropping, sleepless nights, etc. Perhaps the mom was young or had mental disabilities. We cannot speculate on her mental status until the whole story is told. Im not making excuses as I dont know who this mom is but I do hope that this teaches her a very valuable lesson. Babies are gifts that should be treasured. They arent replaceable, nor are they things you can just forget, or throw away. When you take the step to become pregnant you become responsible to protect the life growing inside you and until they go off and have kids of their own. As a parent its your responsibility to protect your child. I for one will pray that the baby does not suffer any ill effects from almost dying of heat stroke/exhaustion.

I am sorry to say I just do not understand how someone can forget their child is in the car. Its not like he or she sneaked into the car with you knowing at 3 months.
Just thinking about forgetting my son in the car scares me. Even though I know I dropped it off at daycare I still out of habit look in the back seat on the way to work just to make sure.
Don’t get me wrong I understand mistakes happen but a mistake like this can kill a child.

If I ever locked my son in the car LE or Fire wouldn’t have to be called, the first brick or anything I find will be going through the driver window in a heart beat.

O’ A little trick I am learned with EMS, the ball point of your antenna will break at window as well.  smile

I would think you could break the window not by the child(front opposite side of car seat). Chaz-I don’t think you would be charged. I’ve had some things happen in my job over the last couple of years that I have told my husband had the folks actually given me the child-I would risk facing kidnapping charges(gladly) and he (LE)said I wouldn’t. Fortunately, DHR handled it. My point being, that anytime a child is in danger, we should err on the side of the welfare of the child-the rest be darned.

the thing to remember is to get the baby out of the car before you break out all the windows, if you have to flatten a few tires while your at it,  oh well.

A spare spark plug tossed at a window will crack/shatter it nicely. Usually, you can make it come down in a bit of a contained mess from that point. RMseek should know some techniques EMS use to break windshields. I keep a spark plug hanging on a tread from my door handle just in case my auto locks in my car dont’ function.

I would gladly go to jail and know that a child was still alive. the bfa

Kissinggranny

yea, I know and frankly they can arrest me. And as they are booking me I will make a huge stink saying “yea I get arrested for saving a child’s life, what will the mother get for putting her child’s life in danger” Then I would go to the press, Then I would go to the sepreme court, and as far up as I have to go to show ppl of this world that leaving a child in a hot car and prosecuting those who intervene and save the baby, while not prosecuting the person who indangered the life (accident or no)is just plain stupid!!!!!!!!!! Yea go ahead and arrest me cops for saving a infant’s life, I’d like to see what your pR will be like when I’m done!

hey chazzaroux dont you know if you break that car window you go to JAIL,for breaking and endering.this makes me sick, some mom leavening her baby in a hot car.why after she got in store she didnt think wheres my baby at and go back to get it,dhr stinks.i wonder how old this girl was wheres the dad AND WHAT IS HER NAME

Why wont Gulf Shores PD charge her???This is all too strange.  Come on WKRG…get investigating…you are journalists…

She needs to be charged with child endangerment, plus put into a hot car for several hours.

I had four daughters and my neighbor had 3 boys and whenever we went anywhere together, we always counted kids before starting the car and always counted again before we locked the car.  Once we did have one kid missing, but since we only counted 6 kids we knew someone was missing, so we did not start the car and one of us went looking for the 7th kid—found him napping on a sofa.  But that was our routine.

For the life of me I cannot see why someone would leave a 3 month old in a car - you cannot be that preoccupied!
