Loxley, Alabama may be a small town, but it sees more than its fair share of characters traveling Interstate 10."You'd be surprised at how many guys they encounter that are just crazy," said Loxely Police Chief Chip Cason.
It's no surprise then, that a police officer making an early morning traffic stop didn't think much of a guy claiming to be driving 2,400 miles to marry an Olympic gymnast.
In the dash cam video that recorded the stop, the officer asked 34-year-old Robert O'Ryan where he was headed.
"California," replied O'Ryan who went on to say he was meeting a friend. "Who is she," asked the officer. "Shawn Johnson," mumbled O'Ryan. "She's an Olympic gymnast. She's on TV now."
During the 29 minute stop, O'Ryan talked about Johnson at least three times, and when asked if he'd ever spoken to the gymnast and Dancing With The Stars contestant personally, he said only in his dreams.
"Today with Internet dating it's not uncommon to encounter people traveling miles across states to go meet people that they've met on the Internet for the first time," said Cason, who says the officer didn't even know who Johnson was when he gave O'Ryan two traffic tickets: one for having no insurance and the other for an expired license plate.
Cason insists there was no way for the officer to know the man standing in front of him would be arrested five days later with a pair of loaded guns, duct tape and love letters to his idol.
O'Ryan faces a felony stalking charge after he was spotted trying to sneak in to the CBS Studios during a Dancing With The Stars Rehearsal.
