Phillip Gilmer owns Gilmer's Funeral Home in West Mobile. He plans to donate caskets free of charge to the Samson shooting victims.
He says he has paid about $15,000 for 5 caskets so far, but he would rather not say which families have accepted his offer or if a casket was offered for Michael McClendon.
Gilmer says when he heard about the shootings in Samson, it really hit home.
"My brother was murdered a few years ago and I know what they are going through and it's not a good place to be,"Said,Gilmer.
Gilmer also plans to cover shipping costs for the caskets and is loaning a hearse to Pittman's Funeral Home in Samson at no charge.

Never argue with an idiot. They’ll bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Are there any good people left in this country?

Mr. Funeral Home Guy (Phillip Gilmer),

You should have just done this and kept your mouth shut.  Everytime someone does a good deed, they undo it by broadcasting it and blowing a trumpet.  If the press found out, you should have refused to talk to them.  My goodness.  We don’t have to look for a pat on the back everytime we do something nice.

Gay Power

Thank you funeralemployee, I personally think you and Mr. Gilmer deserve applause and praise.

I am sorry but as an employee of Gilmers Funeral Home I had to speak up in a non-confrontational manner. The only benefit to appearing on the news in this way is to encourage more people to step up in the funeral industry to lend a hand, which it has. In less than 12 hours of appearing on the news, other funeral homes have stepped up and offered their services to help the people and the funeral homes and directors effected by this tragedy. It generated conversation in the funeral industry which let to even greater outpooring of support and donations. A local vault company has donated all of the burial vaults, for example. Sometimes, in a world of such selfishness it is hard to spot someone who has genuine care and concern for people. Who better to understand than someone who has been a funeral director for roughtly 30 years and whoose brother was murdered recently. You are either in this demanding business for the money or you have genuine deep and loving care for the people you serve.

Phil Gilmer is a very nice and generous person! That was a great act of kindness! Not publicity. Thats the difference in family owned and a conglomert (or how ever you spell it). They have compassion for families not just a another person.

If it helps, I apologize for appearing to make Phil look like a bad man. I don’t think he is.
Sorry if I hurt anyone. I have a thing about businesses getting advertizing this way- just my poorly-expressed opinion.
Peace grin

I think it’s great what this man has done to offer help.  As far as thinking he did it for advertisement I disagree. 35,000.00 for advertisement is an awful lot of money to spend on a business that seems to be doing well and will continue to do well as long as people continue to die.
I believe this was a simple act of someone with the resources wanting to do something good for someone else.

They didn’t want the publicity for some reason
BUT to say someone did a good deed just for publicity is mistaken.  I would say he did it to let the people of Geneva know people in Mobile care or to let the people of Mobile know we can all do something for people not necessarily in our area.  Random statements berating someone that does a good deed, helps who? Just because you would have done it differently doesn’t mean he did something bad.

A college in South Mississippi just received a gift of 6 million dollars.
The giver did not publish name.
Why?

BTW- I am not competition.  I do know Mr Gilmer.
And I grieve for those people killed, and the surviving family.
I am not a mean guy, just commenting.
I respect all opinions.

Mr. Gilmore is a VERY nice guy. His donations come straight from his heart. I have known him for quite sometime (before he opened the funeral home) and his gracious acts are NOT for publicity. When my 3 month old nephew died suddenly, he was there to lend a helping hand. He arranged the entire funeral, casket included, without charging my family so much as a dollar!! Maybe if Mike knew Phil as a person, he wouldn’t be so quick to judge!
