The price tag for the annual Gulf Coast Classic college football game could jump by more than 1000%

Last year, the city paid out 40,000 for the match up between Alabama State University and Southern University. This year, Mayor Sam Jones is proposing to increase that budget to 450,000!

He says the game will become a true classic and offer 3 days worth of activities. He believes it will attract thousands of new visitors and get a commitment from both teams. "Historically black universities have classics not bowl games and that's what this is. Our goal is to draw at least 45 thousand to Mobile and we think it can draw that if it becomes a true classic."

Councilwoman Connie Hudson is not convinced that this is the best way to spend city money. "I was shocked that the administration would recommend that sort of an increase with these times. You hear the administration talking about how we don't have capacity to fund things. We don't have capacity to fund this classic over 1-thousand percent increase. It's disturbing."

The city council is scheduled to vote on their budget at Tuesday's meeting. The cash for the classic is in that budget.

The Director of the Gulf Coast Classic told News 5 that if the city doesn't approve the additional money, Southern University might not come to Mobile this year to play. The game is slated for November 15th.

On a similar note, I am still waiting for the City to hire Scott Novak as the head of the Mobile Tennis Center (renamed Copeland-Cox).  He has been able to bring in state, regional and national tennis tournaments to Mobile held year round, and the economic impact is in the millions.  But instead of appointing the person rated #1 by the personnel board (Novak), the Mayor has brought in someone from Lyons Park who does not have anywhere near the experience.  Once again, the economic impact on the community is ignored.  Just a couple weeks ago, there were over 500 juniors from around the South (and their parents/coaches) for a 3 day tournament and several more large tournaments before the end of the year…..At least Council President Copeland has said he supports Mr. Novak.  This position came available in April - what is the hold up?  Maybe they are waiting to see how much money they will get from annexed areas.

How dare anyone call Councilwoman Hudson a racist! I applaud her for holding her ground and not folding to claims of “racism”. She truly is trying to do what is best for our city, INCLUDING the African-American citizens!! Because this affects us all, every color. This is a complete waste of money, and that’s all there is to it. The other council members play the racism card because that is all they have. Nothing else supports this idiotic venture. The behavior of the other council members should be checked. It’s ridiculous how they act! They interrupt, yell, and put words in people’s mouths. Shame on them. Shame.

Instead of screaming and calling anyone that questions this giveaway a racist, maybe they should make their case based upon sound financial principles.  Let’s see how much revenue this event has generated in the past, reveal how the money would be spent and then let’s all take a look at the bottom-line.

From the news article:  “The Director of the Gulf Coast Classic told News 5 that if the city doesn’t approve the additional money, Southern University might not come to Mobile this year to play. The game is slated for November 15th.”
So, is this a THREAT?  So, who’s the money supposed to be paid to?

Is there anyone here who can put those WKRG pieces on You Tube?
If so, please post the URL (link) when it’s up.

We should have a record on UTube of the demise of Mobile and the use of threats and accusations of racism to ensure the demise. Using the race card has worked for 40 years to end any rational discussion that has nothing to do with race and everything to do with sound economic practices.
It’s the same with the gerrymandered lines drawn for Moffett Rd area: saying it is what it is resulted in screaming racism. Diverting discussion from the facts to racism stops all discussion.

Rosepetal, it’s so very sad. My condolences to the logical thinking citizens of Mobile. The real sad thing is, that this is just the tip of the iceberg. If obama gets elected this will be nation wide.
When I commented on “Passing judgement on my gender” it was an attempt to show no prejudice torward gender, race, or religious affiliation. That being said I believe my comments are based on rational thought. What I’m witnessing in todays society is a total breakdown of morals, ethics, and a loss of focus of what has made this the greatest country on earth. AMERICA, what is happening to you my love? It breaks my heart to see you in such pain. Only GOD can save us now. Pray, pray pray my fellow brothers and sisters.

MeAmerican, it is unbelievable what i saw. it was nothing more than a bail out for a classic ball game.

I knew it was bad but even this exceeds my disgust with Mobile. I for one am very thankful not to have Ms. Hudsons job!

like i said i hope the gmac bowl, sees this and pulls the bowl game from mobile.

I’m tired of apologizing as I watch this country go in the toilet in an effort to be “politically correct.”  What is going on in Mobile and nationally is abundantly clear!  It is reminiscent of the old fable about the Emperor with no clothes.  Everyone knows what the hell is really going on, but no one wants to say anything at the risk of being called a racist.  So, people are sitting back, while they are verbally abused and lambasted by double-speak and fast talk.  No, no, no prudent judgment about tax payer expenditures could not possibly be the reason for questioning a $450,000 give away.  It has to be an attempt by whitey to beat down the black man!  Scream that you are APPALLED loud enough and the argument ends and the check is cut.
. Just how many people living in dire straights in Mobile really give a flying fig about this ball game?  How many of them could use a portion of that half a million dollars to help them get through the next week?
. This BS has gone too far!
