An incumbent and challenger will face each other in a runoff for Mobile City Council District Three.
Incumbent Clinton Johnson faces Jermaine Burrell.
Johnson came in first, winning about 47% of the vote to Burrell's 37%, with three other candidates in the race.
Burrell's supporters cheered as they watched the results from his campaign headquarters on Government Street.
Burrell said, "I feel like this is definitely a win for the constituents of District Three tonight. We ran a hard race with not as many resources, knocked on a lot of doors, met a lot of the constituents and I'm very excited to move forward to the next phase."
Johnson watched the returns from his campaign headquarters on Houston Street.
He said, "I don't spent my life being disappointed. We worked hard, the voters voted. We are leading the election, we didn't win. The turnout was lower than expected."
Now comes the runoff.
Burrell said, "I'm pretty confident. I just feel as though I just need to build up my base, move forward, work hard the next forty days and we will bring victory to the constituents of District Three."
Johnson said, "We believe that we can get back together, get back to work, strategize, do a few things differently and win the election.
The runoff will take place October 6.
