A Mobile County Commissioner said a mass transit system may be needed to ease traffic congestion along U.S. Highway 43 in the northern part of Mobile County.
Merceria Ludgood cited big traffic increases because of construction of the Thyssenkrupp plant in Calvert.
Thyssenkrupp already employs about 700 construction workers and, eventually, thousands will be on the job site.
Eric Reed works at Thyssenkrupp and thinks a transit system may be a good idea.
He said, "In the morning time about 6:00, 6:30, its like any street in Mobile up here now: traffic bumper to bumper."
Thomas McManus has lived in the area for more than 60 years and said he'd like to see a mass transit system because of traffic.
McManus said, "Its tripled at least from what I've seen ten years ago."
Nick Johnston lives in nearby McIntosh.
He said, "I think it (a transit system) would be a good idea. It would minimize some of the traffic flowing through here right now."
Jim Tucker of Fairport said, "Maybe they could have a pickup area like Hank Aaron Stadium or something like that where they could meet the people."
A Thyssenkrupp spokesperson said at the peak of construction, up to 7000 workers are expected to be at the site each day.
