Surveillance video from the service station shows Jackson emptying gas out of the lawnmower into a Buick Regal. Less than ten minutes from hearing about the robbery, Prichard Police officer Patrick Kynaston drives up and catches Jackson in the act. When the officer begins to pat Jackson down, he makes a run for the driver seat.
"At some point the subject was able to put the vehicle in drive, the officer then locked the steering wheel to the left to prevent himself from being drug beneath the vehicle,"Said an undercover Prichard Police Administrator. Investigators say Kynaston held on while Jackson pulled out onto Highway 45.
"With the position of the steering wheel the vehicle loops back on to 45 back to the parking lot where the officer rolls free then attempts to pursue the vehicle on foot because of oncoming traffic. The vehicle slows down, the officer then attempts to shoot the tires on the vehicle, fires 3 rounds striking the vehicle 1 time on the driver side,"Said the police administrator. But Jackson takes off and Kynaston collapses to the ground.
Investigators later found the stolen vehicle Jackson was driving in Alabama Village. They tell us he is homeless and goes by "Dollar" as his street name.
Prichard Police say officer Kynaston suffered a minor injury to his ankle and is now at home on paid administrative leave for the next 7 days.
Dewayne Jackson is wanted for burglary, stealing a vehicle and for felony assault on a police officer. We're told he no longer has a beard as shown in the mug shot attached to this story.
