Broadway theaters dimmed their marquee lights Tuesday night in tribute to Rodger McFarlane, the Mobile-native who helped found an organization that assists entertainers with HIV and AIDS.McFarlane died Friday in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. He was 54 years old.
McFarlane was the executive director of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS from 1989 to 1994, as it became an influential fundraising and grant-making organization. Broadway League executive director Charlotte St. Martin says McFarlane coordinated Broadway's response to AIDS during the early days of the disease's spread.
McFarlane was born in Mobile and raised on the family's farm in Theodore. After attending the University of South Alabama, McFarlane joined the Navy in 1974.
McFarlane is survived by two brothers, John and Robert.
