MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - A federal judge has sentenced a bank robberknown as the "Billy-Goat Bandit" to five years in prison for a
string of holdups along the Gulf Coast.
Gary Walker pleaded guilty in October to robbing banks
in Alabama, Louisiana and Florida.
The 49-year-old also faces charges of committing another seven
bank robberies in Mississippi between March and July.
FBI agents attached the "Billy Goat" moniker to Walker because
of his scruffy appearance. He was arrested at a Chickasaw crack
house in July.
Prosecutors recommended a sentence of four years and three
months but U.S. District Judge William Steele said he believed a
longer punishment was appropriate.
Assistant Federal Defender Chris Knight asked Steele to
recommend that federal prison officials put Walker at a facility
where he could get substance abuse treatment.
