Investigators with the Alabama Marine Police say choppy waters played a role in the drowning deaths of two teenagers in Big Creek Lake.
New information was released on Friday. The Marine Police say that 17 year old Stephen Fowler and his 16 year old cousin Timothy McDuffie were on board a 14 foot boat Monday when it broke down about a mile from the boat landing in Semmes.
An uncle was called to tow their boat to shore. The uncle tied a rope to the teens' boat and to his own 14 foot aluminum boat.
Investigators say as the boat was being pulled, water started getting into the boat. On Monday the waves on Big Creek Lake were about 0.5 to 2 feet high.
According to investigators, the uncle had to untie the rope from the teenagers' boat to prevent both boats from sinking. The Alabama Marine Police say the boy's boat went under before the uncle could get back around to them. Investigators say life jackets were found inside a compartment on the boat. The teenagers were not wearing life jackets. Their bodies were pulled out of the lake on Tuesday.

I don’t mean this to sound insensitive, but could neither of the boys swim?

That whole thing sounds a little odd.  Why would you leave two guys on a sinking boat?

Why didn’t this uncle act like a responsible adult and make these CHILDREN wear life jackets? THIS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED!

I just want to tell this family how deeply sorry I am for your loss. i prayed that they would be found alive, but I guess God had other plans for them. I still think of those children everyday when I ride over that lake.
