News 5 has received reports from Spanish Fort to the Mississippi state line about a big boom around 2:00 p.m. that shook their homes. We've done some digging, but so far, no one has an answer for us.

The National Weather Serve had no reports and suggested we check with the US Geological Survey.

The USGS is not showing any signs of seismic activity in our area. In fact, the closest earthquake to Mobile within the past week was 718 miles away in Sullivan, Missouri on Saturday night.

Eglin Air Force Base says they are not doing any training flights this afternoon which could've caused a sonic boom.

And both the Mobile County Sheriff's Office and EMA report nothing unusual.

But something definitely happened and it caused a lot of concern. Especially for a West Mobile woman who says dishes fell out of her cabinets and broke on the floor.

We'll keep looking into the mystery and let you know what we find out.

It came from the West, it started as a low rumble and grew louder. Then my whole house shook. It wasn’t like any sonic boom I’ve ever experienced nor was it thunder.

Most probably an amplified sonic boom bouncing off one of the atmospheres layers and coming down hundreds of miles from the point of occurrence, but I did see a strange occurrence in the sky a few weeks back involving an aircraft coming from the west and got confirmation from another person present that I was seeing what I thought I was seeing. It was what was happening ahead of the large plane for what looked to be about a quarter of a mile or so that was interesting instead of behind it.Could be they are experimenting and doing trial runs on a new gadget or two of their’s at the base.

What I heard too sounded like in between what we usually called a “sonic boom” and some long lingering thundering sound. It was kind of cloudy around here at that time so I just assumed maybe it was thunder and didn’t think anymore about it until I saw on WKRG that a whole lot of people felt/heard it.

As usual, no one ever admits what caused it especially if it was Keesler. smile

hey sirk, we live in the far west mobile, it did seem like it started from the west and it got louder and then the whole house shook. maybe it was a sonic boom, but not like any i have heard. the aide who tends to my hubby ran outside to see if something had exploded. because of the rumble i remember thinking is this an earthquake?

I have been too busy to respond in a timely manner to this article, but here is my story and I’m sticking to it.  I live around the MS/AL state line.  I was on the phone talking to a friend in Tillman’s Corner/Mobile when I heard what sounded somewhat like thunder, but it rumbled a little longer than usual.  I didn’t say anything to my friend and I would say about 15 to 20 seconds later she says “what was that?, It sounded like it was thundering”.  So whatever it was, it must have come from the West and went East.  We seem to hear and sometimes feel these “booms?” I can’t say regular, but enough that it doesn’t really make us concerned when we do hear it.

For years we were always told and/or assumed it was coming from Keesler Air Force base planes.

lol bamabob, now that explains it all.

This is supposed to be top secret, but I’m still going to share it with you.  So, don’t tell anyone where you got the rest of the story!

I have learned that Herman Thomas was so upset that Cowboy Bob did not cross T’s and dot I’s that he gave him a jailhouse whuppin’!  The Cowboy’s butt cheeks got to slappin’ back and forth so fast that it actually created a sonic boom!

It created such a noise that Herman’s private choir (adorned in orange jumpsuits) began to sing,

I feel the earth move under my feet
I feel the sky tumbling down
I feel my heart start to trembling
Whenever you’re around…

Now, this is just what I heard from a source that is close to a source that knows a source related to a source that used to detail a source’s car, but I think that is pretty solid evidence!

MobileMa’s article still sounds the most probable to me. Others seem to be contradictory to the reports from the Air Force and Emergency Management reports.

My daughter and I were out on our back porch. We began to hear (and feel) a rumbling which sounded like it was coming from the West. The rumbling got louder and louder then finally began to subside.

It was a slow loud rumble and the earth did shake a bit, though the shaking may have been from the noise. One of our dogs ran over to the fence, on the west side, and began to bark.

What I know it was not:
It was not an explosion, it was not jolting.
It was not thunder, it was too long.
It was not a sonic boom, it was not sudden.

Yet I still am not sure what it was.
