ORANGE BEACH, Alabama - Talk about reeling in a big one. The Mobile Big Game Fishing Clublived up to its name this weekend. One of the anglers caught a gigantic blue marlin today, 9/6/09. The monster marlin weighed in at more than 500 pounds and was about nine and a half feet long. This was part of the fishing club's Labor Day tournament. About a hundred boats and four hundred anglers took part. Adam Bradford caught the big marlin; he says it took a lot to get it in the boat.

“[It’s] a lot of fun, I enjoy fishing a lot and we left on Friday night stayed out for two nights it's just a real enjoyable habit to have I guess,” says Bradford. After the weigh-in Bradford was tossed into the water. Club members say it’s a tradition. Proceeds from this weekend's tournament go to local charities along with the fish meat brought to shore. Bradford caught the largest fish but because of the points system he wasn't the overall winner. Another angler brought a blue marlin of equal length to Bradford's but not nearly as heavy.

Thanks for your response and letting us know that the fish was put to good use.  I do support he Billfish Foundation and encourage others to check it out as well.

Thanks again and I am glad your club had a great tournament this year.

As a member of Mobile Big Game Fishing Club and a member of the tournament committee, I am proud to say the 526 pound blue marlin was put to great use. The meat was donated to a charity that will be feeding many hungry people. The head of the blue marlin will be used for scientific research to help study feeding habits of billfish. A student working on their PhD came to the tournament to collect the head for her studies. All of us at Mobile Big Game Fishing Club agree with you that killing a magnificent fish like that just to win a trophy would not be right. We hope you support organizations like The Billfish Foundation by being a member like many of us in our club do. We release about 96% of the billfish we catch.

and what happened to the 500+ pound blue marlin after they killed it?

Catch and release for big game fish is the right thing to do.

Killing a magnificient fish like this to win a trophy is insane.
